Please rank these four issues in order of importance (in regards to getting a great recording) :

1- Quality of your recording device (portastudio vs. 24track Studer)
2- Quality of mixer/ preamps
3- Quality of Microphones
4- Quality of insturments being recorded (Yamaha acoustic vs. Martin D28)

i've left out criteria like "Skill of musicians" and "Skill of engineer" for obvious reasons. I know they are all important, but please rank them if you can! remember- the desired result is a "great sounding recording"

In my eyes, the skill of the engineer is most important, but since you left that out of the list, you can remove the numbers 2-4 and just call them all number one....

Number 1 IS the skill of the players. Period.
Number 2 is the quality of the instruments/amps they're playing.
Number 3 is quality of the room they're playing in.
Number 4 is the skill of the engineer.
Number 5 is the quality of signal chain (mics/mic preamps/recorder/mixer).

Not sure why you separate-out the mixer and the recording device. There's no advantage to having a great mic, but using a crappy recorder.

True, true, true, true, true and true.

Based on your criteria and the way your question was worded ...

1 - instrument
2 - mics
3 - mixer/pres
4 - recording medium

I'll go one further and say the most important thing is the quality of the song being recorded. Great musicians playing a boring or mediocre song will come out as a boring and mediocre recording. You need a hit song!

And like Blue Bear said, don't forget the quality of the room/accoustic space. That's not even on your initial list... Blue Bear's list seems right to me.

+1

Even with great equipment, a great room, and a great engineer/production team, without skilled musicians, you're just documenting a poor performance.

Numero uno on the list, and a little-known secret, is the quality of the coffee.

and pizza...

and dont forget having a state of the art lava lamp

Poor Milkfaj. I mean, for his purposes, for a given session, the quality of the engineering and musicians are fixed. Thus all he can do is change the items on his list, adding to that his room. Otherwise all we are really telling him is that he should let somebody else record different musicians.

That said, I'll defer to Fletcher. However there is some interplay between III and IV; I think I'd rather record a Martin with an SM81 than a Larrivee with a Rat Shack special . . . but presuming a minimum level of quality for all items, then yeah, it's better to have good sounds to record.

Oh fuck me... I wasn't saying "thing 4 and thing 1", I was using music theory notation for the "Plagal Cadence"... I was agreeing with "Blue Bear" that the item of number 1 importance was the players...

Ya know... it's not really amusing if you have to fucking explain it... music theory... it's not just for geeks anymore.
