Hi again, this is a link to a friend's first steps into recording...he can't speak english so I will translate your opinions for him...

I've been playing and jamming around with this guy since we were in school, and we started playing music together.

I really like his skills in songwriting and singing, but he lacks a bit in recording (so do I)...

Take a listen if you can, be hard if you have to, attack everything (mix, recording, performance, songwriting...)

Thank you mates!

I listened to both tunes.
Dame Mas- Great tune. The hats/cymbals were a harsh and had that "canned" sound. The vocal sounded great but sometimes would dissappear. The female backing vox at 2:10 was a real nice touch. Really dig the acoustics too.
Este Amor- Same comment on the hats/cymbals. The vocal is more out front on this one. The flute solo with the guitar was a nice touch but in a few spots there it sounded like the guitar was picked too hard (I thought I could hear the doplar effect as the string was sounded too hard). These comments are taking it to a fine point. They are very good recordings and songs.

hey PC,

both tunes were nice but the snare on 'Dame Mas' sounded like it may have been compressed to death.....maybe it's just me...that was pretty much the only thing I didn't like....but I didn't like it alot... The rest of the playing and the recording was good IMOP

'EsteAmor' - this tune the drums were better but the vocals may have been overcompressed....

Keep in mind I know next to nothing about anything so take it with a ton of salt..

Overall - nice songs and recording IMOP

later:cool:

Thanks Guys!

I'm telling him...he is a newbie and trying to learn

Later!

very nice effort as usual,

On the first song, the only problem I had was that the vocal was too soft. I totally love the space you put your lead vocal in. Kindly give me the settings so that I can experiment. I would like to know: room size, diffusion, early reflection level, feedback, decay etc. Also, if you do it as a send, how much would you send to the verb bus eg -6 dbs. I would greatly appreciated that. I think the kick could be more punchy on that one, but thats a nitpick.

On the second song, btw, I love that second song. Its ready for radio.

The sound is a bit dated for want of a better word. Also, I think this could benefit from more panning esp the piano. Overall a good effort. THe low end needs to be more punchy again.

If you didnot ask, I would not mind. This is very good production here.

Funk on!

ps. What are you monitoring on? I guess event 20/20s

I didn't even touch this songs

Its from a newbie friend of mine...so I am afraid I won't be able to give you the settings unless he saved them as a preset, in wich case, I have no problem...I'll check out.

I think the monitors are Alesis Monitor One...

I am remixing the songs for him, so I'll post them so you can nitpick me...I like it...I learn a lot...

Peace...

I'm sorry if I'm repeating somebody, but I didn't read any of the other posts. So, here I go:

DAME MAS:
First of all, the kick seems to distort slightly. Not too much, but you might look into it. The snare should use some reverb, since this is a ballad. They usually have those nice full long snares. Not necessarily, but this is too dry. Try spreading the instruments more. They sound too centered. The ending is sort of sudden for this kind of song. This song would work well with a fade-out, IMO. Not into this type of music much, but works. Can't say much about the lyrics :) The singing is good, though. I listened this only once, so don't take this too seriously. Overall, the song is a nice standard ballad.

ESTE AMOR:
The kick doesn't fit the song somehow, it's like it's taken from a dance-song. The instruments should be more spread on this song also. The production is very similar to DAME MAS, and also the song itself is similar. I'm not sure, but the bass seems to be louder on this, and a bit better. The flute is a nice touch here. I think the bongos (or what do you call them) could work well, if they were panned to a little bit to one side, or maybe even a stereo delay effect. The symphony drums towards the end sound kinda out of place. I'm not sure they fit the song. The acoustic guitar sounds nice, could be a bit louder.

Both of the songs are not my type musically, but I would imagine they are pretty standard in their genre, so I think they're good enough. I really hope I wasn't too brutal, but you wanted hard critics, so you got it :)

Hey Cranky!

Dont worry, it's not my type either...it's a friend's tune
I agree with you all guys...in fact Cranky, you said exactly what I needed to hear...thank you all guys...again...
