Just got done doing this today. It's funny, the band needed it in a hurry to put on a compilation, it only took 3 days, and it sounds better than anything i've ever done. Mostly because the band was legit as fuck and were extremely tight (i'm not used to that). Also, they all had really good equipment and knew how to use it, haha. Also, if you are fans of hardcore / metal / rock, or just heavy music in general, then definitely check it out, good band: Off With His Head . This song, along with the other one will be available on their myspace later tonight, which I linked with their name. =]

Drums:

Presonus Firepod
- Kick: AKG D112
- Snare: Shure SM57
- Toms: Audix F10's
- Overheads: R0DE NT5's

Compressed the kick / snare, EQ'd everything. Added reverb to snare / toms.

Guitars:

MBox 2
- Both guitars were 5150's, different tubes / tone in each one.
- Sennheiser e609 (between center / edge of cone).

A little EQ, and delay on the "solo-ish" part.

Bass:

MBox 2
- Rack Mounted Sans Amp

EQ, Compression, Automation.

Vocals:

MBox 2
- Shure SM57 (I like using it for this type of music).

Put up a really dense blanket, shaped it into a "U" had the singer stand in it. =] Put some EQ, Compression, Reverb, and Delay on some parts.

I recorded drums with the Firepod and imported them into Pro Tools, from there everything was recording and mixed in Pro Tools. =] This is the best i've ever felt about one of my mixes. Any criticism, good or bad, is greatly appreciated. Please take a listen:

Thanks ahead of time, I appreciate it. =]

Take care,
Adam.

I'm no connoisseur so I'll just say what come to mind as I listen...

- cymbals are a little hot, especially in the beginning ,they kinda wash things away. It might be the MP3 conversion though.
- the snare sounds good, the snap is cool
- the bass is not very loud, and has very little bottom end.

The rest of the mix - guitars, vocals, drums seem to be pretty level/cool. Nice sound on the guitars...suitable for this genre..... Great playing too.

Thanks for the input dude, I really appreciate it. The cymbals might sound a little hot but they were way more hot before, I had to change them. It might be the MP3 conversion because I thought I had them fine now.. The bass is definitely the MP3 conversion because the bounced AIFF file has a lot of Low end on bass, and if played in a car stereo it's definitely present. I'll keep what you said in mind for next time, thanks though dude. =] How does the overall Quality sound to you?

Take care,
Adam.

The mix lacks low end, sounds a bit harsh, think thats from lack of low end from the bass.

Singing (well screaming) sounds cool. Could do with some volume automation as its hiden at times.
Sounds good apart from that.

Is that delays (and double tracking) in the vocals at points.
Hard to tell if im just tired or actually hearing it. If its there then it really works well to bring more energy to the song.

Like I said it might be the Lightning MP3 conversion, but honestly in a regular stereo it has a good amount of low end. In fact, the band wanted less low end from the mix before this. Oh well man, they like it like this but i'll keep it in mind.

Also, on the vocals, I did no add any delay on ths screaming. On the other song they recorded he does actual singing and I put some delay on that. All that's on the screaming is Compression / EQ / Slight reverb. Glad it sounds good to you dude. =] Thanks for listening.

No probs man.
I would consider checking out this mix on different sound systems as the low end is lacking definetly. The high mids are too much.
I mean this could be fixed by a mastering engineer but I would suggest fixing it in the mix first.

There is a chance if you keep your overall mix tone like this that peoples ears will fatigue faster than if you had more low end and less high mids. Which in turn will mean your music will last longer.

The noise (guitar feedback?) That comes in near the end is a little overpowering. Sounds real nice but takes away from the mix a little.

Hey Eck, I upped the low end in the bass, cut a little high-mids out, and cut out some high-mids in the cymbals. Granted, it did sound a lot better. I called the dude and gave him the CD, and he is going to have it on their myspace by like 6:30 PST. The link is in my first post if you want to hear it, let me know if I did good, haha. Once again man I really appreciate you listening to the song and giving me all the feedback that you did, and if you listen to the new version thanks once again dude. =] Have a happy new year.

Take care,
Adam.

The overall tone is alot smoother and easier listening. Myspaces MP3 bitrate is only either 96k or 112k which isnt the best to judge mixes on, but it does sound alot better than the first mix.

Eck

You could maybe cut some low mids around 200-300Hz in the bass or/and guitars although could be just from the myspace MP3 conversion.

Eck

Sorry, think I might have listened to the wrong mixes. Althought the myspace mixes sound alot smoother than the mix you posted on this thread.

Thanks dude, I really appreciate you going back and checking them out. Ya, they posted the other song too if you wanted to listen to that one. I've never done "Clean" vocals before, i've always screaming, so it's a first and I think it came out awesome. Anyway, thanks duder. =]

Yeah tis sounding better, but hard to comment on myspaces crappy MP3 quality.

Eck

The intro reminds me of The Chariot, nice mix overall but the kick could be a little louder. Nice !
