I have a Fender Strat (MIM) and a Gibson LP Studio... going into a PODxt (VOX AC30TB) I am struggling to get a nice defined sound with either one... surprisingly I can get a better tone from the Les Paul.

Can you guys share your thoughts on what settings would work better to get a nice crunch and a nice distortion?
My settings...
Drive: 4
Bass: 4
Middle: 5
Treble: 7
Presence: 0
Reverb: 0

(I also have a VOX AC4TV but I live in an apartment and to get the tones I want I would have to crank it up... I also don't have an SM57, only an AT dynamic vocal mic. )

wow, its very hard to answer without really knowing what sound you're after!

What is it about the les paul tone that you like? What consitutes a "nice" distortion for you?

You could try some of these generic settings but really, there's not much I can say other than keep turning the knobs until you like it

Mid scooped - Bass 7, Mid 3, Treble 7, Drive 10

Vintage indie - Bass 4, Mid 8, Treble 6, Drive 4

Cock Rock - Bass 11, Mid 11, Treble 11, Drive 11

I don't really like the POD XT's AC30TB model. (It sounds nothing at all like an AC30TB, for one thing.) One thing you can do to beef it up a little is to change the cabinet to a 4 X 12 with Greenbacks.

If I recall, this model starts exhibiting breakup at around 4/10, and is pretty saturated by 7/10 or 8/10.

Other than that, the tone settings are up to you.

Thanks for the generic settings... I'm looking for a U2-like tone... clean yet you hear some breaking... especially in the album "how to dismantle an atomic bomb".

Something like brit-pop-rock...

Not even a slight giggle about the Spinal Tap reference? Meh, that one fell flat.

But the point is, no one can really tell you the "correct" settings for the sound that you want... you know in your mind what you want to achieve, so you are the best person to work out how to get that sound. We might be able to point you in the right direction based on the tones of the artists you've mentioned, but the ultimate decisions come down to you.

Yep, trust me I am a strong advocate of "go play the guitar/amp/etc. in the store and then decide"... strangely I am struggling all around even after hours of tweaking... but yes, basically, somewhat of a clean tone that saturates at times is what I am looking for (think The Edge)
