hey guys, please listen to these 2 identical songs and tell me if you think im on the right track with my mixing and lame attempt at mastering. the first one was done before i knew anything (still dont) about compression and the 'mastering' process, but i am living and learning as i go along. any advice/critique/comment is welcome.

first attempt. mixed down and saved with no additional 'finishing' work:

newest rendition with some compression and slight reverb added to 'finish' it up:

again, any input is welcome and appreciated. :)

Yep - version two definitely sounds more polished. It's brighter, drums are punchier, vocals clearer, and added smoothness from the reverb....
You're a natural at this music stuff..... :) ;) :D

Great Job!

lol. thank you very much. :)

someone in another thread (sorry i cant remember who) mentioned something about over-compressing giving a 'breathing' effect to the piece. i cant hear anything like that but maybe some of yall with better ears can tell me if this is happening?

Sounds pretty good to me. Def nice and loud and punchy, but not oer compressed mush.

I dont get any "breathing" sound from the compression either.

That "breathing" sound is also called compressor pumping. Compressor pumping, where a regular amplitude peak (such as a kick drum) causes the rest of the mix to change in volume due to the compressor, is generally avoided in music production. However, many dance musicians use this phenomenon in a creative way, causing the mix to 'pump' rhythmically in time with the beat.

As far as the pumping goes in your mastered song, I can hear a little bit of it. And as far as fixing that problem, maybe take the gain down on the compressor a little bit.

oh okay. thanks for that explanation. i thought i could faintly hear it a little, but wasnt exactly sure what i was listening for.

I only listened to each one twice.
I liked the second or lower one better.
Drums noticeably better at the starting gate.

Seems there's something "blurring" a bit in the infamous bass area.
maybe the compressor as someone stated or just ready for some magic mastering.

personally I like the art work of windows media player,cool..
but in my opinion, soundclick and few others I've played sound better? clearer...anyone else hear that. I think Windows Media player adds some mush-potatoes. :p

The second mix is noticeably better. The effect you added to the guitar was just right IMO. Didn't really notice much of a change on the vocals, but it could be the speakers that I'm listening through. Drums are definitely crisper, maybe a little on the loud side for me, but still good. Great piece.
