You could point it at the kick mic. Just make sure it's not plugged in!

SM57 isn't the best mic for bass drum, but if it's all you've got I would put it just inside the front of the shell, pointed at the beater.

Wrap it up in a towel and throw it in there. Any sort of strategy will probably just drive you to drink.

Its a challenge, that's for sure.
Phil's got it right- use it like any kick dynamic mic. If its all I have I tend to not point it right at the beater. I start there but angle it off to some degree. Otherwise all you get is click. Spend some time getting the placement so that it sounds the best it can.
