Replace 'fuckface' with something else.

Kinda disrupts the flow of words. Haven't listened to the tune.

studioviols: There is a fine line between being helpful and useless.

Um... wow.

I see what you mean. I have two things to say, at the risk of becoming another HR.com pariah, I totally do not disagree with your lyrics. I've had a problem with every war we've been in since WWII (not that I was alive then), and I think we do need those dissenting voices to keep us "sane." I abhor the fact that anyone today who disagrees with the "president's" opinion is anti-American. 9/11 was a horrible and tragic occurance, but it doesn't mean we have the right to take over the world. Even PR-wise, we're doing more harm than good by forcing our force on other countries. Anyway...

Regarding the mix (which you didn't ask for) -- unless you've changed it, the vocals are a bit strong in places. Compression would help a lot, but I think the level needs to come down a bit too. Nicely composed, but the keyboards sound a little "fake" in the way they just END on so many notes. Sounds very MIDI.

I know you didn't ask for the critique, and I'm sorry you got such a horrible response on such a socially aware song. It amazes me how people still react to propoganda the same way they have for millennia. When will people start thinking for themselves and not letting the govt. do it for them?!

*sigh*

How did we get here from a simple post?

Deep!~ LOL

Okay, I don't know what all that negativity about the lyrics was all about and honestly don't see the big deal about it. I personally like when the lyrics are posted. The title doesn't reflect what the song lyrics are and some might have been offended if they listened to it and expected something else.

Anyways, I had a listen. I found it a mix of East Indian influence, meets Darth Vader in a good, "Concrete Blonde" sort of way! :) I was waiting for a progressive climax about 3/4's of the way into the sing but it didn't happen. (This probably makes even less sense than the stuff above!)

Okay, now I'm off to listen to King Elvis's song "You Saved Me"! he he

How can you know "you fuckface" disrupts the flow of words if you haven't listened to the song?

Actually, I think it's a nice punctuation point. !!!!!

Happy listening.

Nice. I hear the Concrete Bonde reference. You're talking "Roses Grow," I bet. Never dawned on me. I love CBlonde. Jeanette Napoliatano (who can spell her name?) has a bitchin' voice, and they had some GREAT songs (including Roses Grow... what about God Is a Bullet? Caroline? The Little Wing cover?).

Thanks for listening, and I'm not sure what the hubbub was myself!

oh, 'you fuckface' is the bitchslap that I 'demand' be in this song, it stays.

And thank you PiltdownMan for listening. I appreciate the remarks on the mix.

This was one of my first computer based mixes of my own work, and not just a string arrangement or part. It's bone dry pretty much, a pearl in the rough. It is totally MIDI, and I intend to work this one out with real instruments, I've got some field recording gear to go to the local university and use on of their grands on the sly ... heh heeeee !

Thanks for immidiately recognizing my goals in this song.

Nice to read some original thoughts on this BBS. But what do I know...I'm just a radio host with a large, very influential music industry audience. If you'd really like to stir up some trouble, email me a working link to your music, or, just email me the song to dbaker@worldtalkradio.com...I'll play it. And remember: when the community beats you down for expressing your thoughts, do what America's Founding Fathers did - don't change your thoughts, start an enlightened community.

I'm tellin' ya Pilty ... you got something special here. Dave has NEVER asked an individual artist on this board straight up and out in the open to play their tune ...

Of course Dave is in the shithouse with half the board anywayzzz ... but he does have a cool radio show and I think he gets a coupla' hits everyday :D

I personally like the track and really feel that posting the lyrics was a good idea. Nice job Piltdown, and without offending anyone here, I hope you post more of this kind of stuff with the lyrics.

Ok, I've re-ass-essed my posts on this thread, and I went overboard on the lyrics issue, I was trying to be tongue-in-cheek, but it didn't work out that way. I'm an idiot this time, and I deserve to be an idiot sometimes and I love all of you ...

hugs to WinstonCowboy ...

I will simply avoid looking at any posted lyrics until after the first listening ...

I can't help myself - I have to respond because, musically speaking, I got something out of this. I never hear lyrics the first 10-20 times through a tune - I'm hearing the total musical interplay. If the tune is good I'll learn the lyrics later.

I'm pretty much an analog thinker so I'm not sure if that bass is a bass or a synth - regardless I like it - the guitar tone was nice, too. Mix-wise it keeps my interest - lots of variety with some nice, clear tones that move my listening point of refernce while the drums keep the focus. I need to try something like that - it's pretty creative. - - although I'm totally distracted by the effect on the doubled vocal - reminds me of the effect on Linda Blair's voice in the Exorcist.

And at the risk of getting involved in the sidebar/sideshow fracas - your caveat-laden thread title is ironic since your lyrics somewhat paraphrased the Book of Ecclesiastes - the 'old guys' apparently considered these thoughts. How to deal and cope with those thoughts are life's eternal question.

But shouldn't we be FOCUSING on the mix-side and toss this social commentary somewhere else? What a crock of shit - I think it's all pretty funny - and quite honestly - I would have never dl'd this tune after reading your first angst-filled retort to a comment - I've been divorced three times and haven't ever felt like launching on someone like that. no excuse, man - it's anger management time.

A written forum is open to mis-interpretation - look for the positive first - this is a pretty positive forum - people don't launch flames unless your vocals are grotesquely out of tune or you've overpowered the guitar wanking with something like drums!

Nice work - seriously - I'm taking a few things away from it.

This is cool stuff Piltdown Man. While some of the textures and tones remind me of Yello, it remains highly original. The spoken lyric at the start is too avant garde for me, but other than that...fabulous.
Great mix too. This is right up there with that one of Sluice's

It's 5:30 am and I can't sleep so this is a head phone listen.

Sounds great on the cans- awesome stereo mix. I love the vocal splits!

Ahhh...some good ol' contraversy...

:)

That's where I come from too. To me, good lyrics are a set of words that flow well with the music. An interesting or strong message is icing on the cake. Everyone listens differently - do what you like.

I thought this tune was done very well. Nice soundscape. Great bass sound. Cool guitars around 2:20. Love the "ahh ahh" stuff too.

My only advice would be to do something more interesting with the vocals (the spoken stuff). The sound quality of the vocals are not as interesting as what's going on behind them. Maybe some call and response? Some additional layers at higher pitches? Some delay? Just some thoughts. Because this song is very centered on the lyrics, you probably want to make sure the vocals are at least as strong and interesting as everything else.

And yes Dave, there are plenty of original thoughts on this board. Maybe you haven't listened or read enough.

Yeah you're right, that was a bit unfair.

I thought the lyrics were really cool in their own right, but the 'fuckface' part kinda wrecked the flow from 'my' perspective. Kinda 'cheapened' the excellent cohesiveness of the lyrics up to that point. Just my opinion, who gives a fuck. :)

I'm listenening to it now.

Excellent tune, very creative. Don't care much for the Middle Eastern / East Indian type vocal thing in the middle. The intro is really good, reminds me of Alice Cooper for some weird reason.

Great stuff PiltdownMan!

Oh...Oh...OOHhhhhHHHH!

HELL YA!
This song is a keeper!

I have no mix tips...but thanks for posting the lyrics.
This rocks...hard.

A fucking plus!

Hmmmm... very interesting.

First off, good production. The minimalist instrumentation has really ensured maximum clarity in the parts. I think this is very good. I didn't like the unaccompanied lines in the very beginning it gave me a feeling of the Simpsons Reverend but once the music and drums came in you really captured a great vibe going there and it felt like a cross between Butthole Surfers and Type O Negative.

Keep up the good work mate, im impressed.

I must've missed something...

but ok...

oh.. one thing i'd like to add. I like it when people post the lyrics to their songs. I've never in my life heard a song where I didn't need the lyric sheet to understand what i'm saying (not even the beatles) so i think this is a good idea.
