I'm looking into the Phillips 760 cdrw for mixing down from my tascam 488 8 track recorder, I usually mixdown to my stereo vcr, my question is has anyone here used one of these units and what opinions do you have? It's on sale for $299 here so any info will be appreciated.
thanks,
Russ

I was thinking of purchasing the same model, until a friend who works at a local music store told me they weren't going to be carrying them anymore. The problem wasn't with their performance but rather with the number that were coming back broken.

Philips is most definitely an innovator when it comes to new technology (audio and video).
However, I think that they try to do whatever it takes to reduce the cost of their consumer gear. So much that it really is a detriment to their reputation. My opinion only, of course!
I bought a Philips DCC recorder (i know, i know ...) a few years back for around $250 and thought that it was a sweet alternative to an expensive DAT recorder. About a year later the DCC machine broke down and started eating all my *limited supply* :) DCC tapes and it's been collecting dust ever since.
I eventually bought a Tascam CDRW5000 for aroun $999 and think it was worth every penny. Tascam also has a lesser version now ... the CDRW700 with a msrp of around $699 http://www.tascam.com/products/category_cdrecorders.html
I'd favor Tascam over Philips any day.

Anyway...
I guess my point is ... if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

I am currently using a Philips 760 for archiving and backing up my data and it works great. My digital recorder is a Vestax HDR-6 and it has an optical out. So I can master and mixdown right to the 760. Another good feature is to use the re-writable disks where you can mix the songs down several ways and then pick the best ones. A good place to buy the regular special discs that they require is CDR Express - for about a $ 1.40 each with a jewel case. You can also leave your session open and record up to 80 minutes.
