Yea...I was the one that started the best mic for cab recording a while back...I picked up an e609 and a used Royer on the way. I sorta like the e609...it's a little brash but sounds kinda cool. Anyways,...

I'm having still having fits with mixed cab/speaker recording...I'm still getting comfy with my latest cab addition. My previous cabs all had the same speakers...2x12 or 4x12's with matching speaks.

I've got a new one which is a mixed 2x12. One speaker has better bass response while the other is vintage brittle rock sounding. The cab as whole sounds nice...really it does at about 5 feet out and further. When you get in close, you can find several "sweet spots" for each of the speakers. My thinking was that I would close mic each speaker and one further out in the room and mix them to taste. But micing this thing up is really giving me fits.

My question is regarding phasing. I've tried various combos of mic but I keep coming up with some weird phasing problems. One mic on each speaker. Similar locations on the cones but 180 out. Is this normal? Since the speakers are wired up in parallel, I would have thought the phasing to be the same. BTW...I did verify that they were in parallel.

Thanks

4 mic's, 1 cab
good luck.

mic the bright one and the bassy one.
or mic one close and one far.... you choose the speaker. but 4 on one cab? (5 counting the "far" mic) not worth the trouble, you'll never overcome the phase problems enough to benifit from having different sounding speakers.

maby try, mic two, play
mic the other two, play again.
good luck.

Parallel is one thing- are they both wired with the same polarity?

I second easychair's question. You can have speaker elements wired in parallel, but if one speaker has the terminals crossed you'll be exactly 180 degrees our of phase.

Your original question I think describes it's own answer - or at least possible set of answers. Try miking it the way you'd mic an acoustic guitar; put the mic where it sounds good to your ear. If you have a swwet spot 5 feet out where the combo of elements sounds good, mic it there. Or tey any othe closer sweet spots you mention (though you might come across the 3:1 distance limitations there if you try multi-miking inside the cab's nearfield but not close enough to be "close miking".

Hmm...seems so..."amatuer" doesn't it...damn...I should have thought that one up...alright...I suck.

I wonder if it's because one of the mics is an SM57 and the other is an SM58? Ok...it's just a joke for Blue Bear's sake. :D

Thanks gents...I have to say, I had one mic up close to speaker "A", another mic close to speaker "B", and another LDC mic "C" at about 5 feet out.

When I started fiddling with the mix, I could get mic "A" and "C" right on the money with a nice sound but, I was missing a bit of the bottom end for which mic "B" was supposed to take care of.

When I noticed the dead farty sound and started moving mic "B" around, to get it into a complimentary position, it had to put it pretty much back with the third mic.

I'll get into the back of the cab later after dinner. Salmon on the barbie night...not "Barbie" but the "bar-b".

Good call guys! Thanks...I'll let you know it works out.

Thanks Gents/Ladies...as it applies.

To Girafe...sorry my post may have seemed a bit scattered...only using a total of 3 mics...one on each speaker up close and one further back at about 5 feet. I've done this sort of thing before but using a 4x12 (one mic) and a 1x12 (a second mic) and one in the room (3rd mic) to mix up the sounds a bit...anyways, I digress.

It's true...the polarity of one of the speakers was reversed...causing one speaker to pull in while the other is pushing out. A simple flip of the speaker wires and they both behave similarly. I have to say, when I crank it up, it sounds a little differently too...could be mental...that wouldn't be a suprise in my house though.

Call me the happy camper...just feeling a little dorked...I shudda fingered that'n out fer ma self.

I came real close to sending Blue Bear a PM to ask if part of the problem was because I used an SM57 on one speaker and an SM58 (ball removed of course) on the other.
