i'm cruising the net on AOL, wit IE open in win xp pro while my boy is composing a track in sonar 2. on a DUAL Athlon MP 1900+ setup with a 430 watt power supply...which strangely enuff says P4 on it...no problems at all..except when i try to over clock it

The power supply will almost always say P4 and AMD on it these days. ATX power supply, doesn't matter.

All in the matter of homework

I've done my homework before I purchased AMD or a Intel. My wife is a tech and I am as well and we've had this argument for 3 years.
Then we did research on the whole situation. Alot of people get AMD to overclock or they don't get a decent mobo to go along with it and they run into several problems.. Overclocking puts damage on your chip over the years no matter how cool you make it and can make your computer crash and all that nice stuff.. YAY for Blue Screens!

We have read several reports of testing and all that garbage and AMD out performed and was more efficent then P4 was. I think we saw alot of this off of tomshardware.com and other simular sites. There is alot of ways to make the AMD quieter and run very smooth. Just get the right hardware to go with it and you will not run into any problems..

I have a k7t266 Pro2 MSI board with a Athlon 1900+XP with Windows XP Pro and still haven't came across a crash or any conflict and at the sametime run any kind of software that I want.

I know alot of people that have had problems with Intel and AMD but the fact of the matter is they usually haven't done they're home work before they throw together they're PC..

The Intel against AMD war will always be here just like Chevy and Ford or IE or Netscape etc. And people will have negative stories about each one..Remember there is other CPU's out there and people will stick up for what one they believe in and go negative as hell on the others.. They're both decent but with a huge price differance. And AMD doesn't advertise and still keeps they're price under Intel with effective performances, and thats why I pick AMD. They have come along way since the k-6 series thank god but they're working past that and getting better with each chip.

Sorry..It's late and i'm rambling and will read this later and come to realize I have made no sence...But thanks for reading if you got this far haha...

Later-

Steve

My friend bought AMD.
We both have a VERY similar setup, same soundcards, same programs, win2000, etc...

My computer works flawless.
His computer is constantly having problems.

Heh, motherboard baby. It's all about the motherboard.

I say go with AMD cause they need money. If they only had a quarter of the money Intel has to do research on new tech, I bet Intel would be suffering. Intel has all the big players on its side and AMD is more end user oriented. AMD just can't spend millions on advertisement like Intel but they still managed to stay in the fight cause they're CPUs are great... When you look at benchmarks and you see an AMD 1.4gig outperform an Intel 1.6gig, you can ask youself what the hell is Intel doing with the extra 200MHz... hmm lemme see... oh yeah! I know! They try to fool ppl with the "my number is bigger than yours" trick.

Only a few ppl know that 1.6Ghz isnt necessarly "faster" than 1.4Ghz. Most ppl just look at numbers... "Oh, Intel is faster cause there's more Mhz! AMD sucks!"... heh

Dunno why but Intel and M$ fit well togheter in my mind. AMD would be Linux :)

I do sense some tongue in cheek but statements like that are pointless. In fact, they're going to put off computer novices from buying AMD, just because words like Linux will scare them away. Don't get things mixed up here.

Although I don't like all the tricks M$ pulls and Linux has come a long way I strongly believe M$ still provides the best user interface, especially for people who don't know computers inside out.

AMD plus M$ would in my opinion be the best combination for the majority of computer users.

BTW. yes, I know Linux. Got several servers running on it and I absolutely love it as server OS.

You'll love it in about 5 years for a DAW too, once everything's ironed out. They've already gotten latency on drivers down to 3ms for the majority of major cards, like all of M Audio and most of Aardvark.

The only problem is the software for multitracking isn't there yet. But I'm waiting. Patiently.

Do have a site or source of info that backs up your claims about drivers and latency?

Just curious...

At this point it sounds like it's all a personal preference thing don't it? ;)

Pentium 4's and audio

After spending some time on the Propellerhead's forums, I have heard reports that Intel's Pentium 4 has some issues when processing audio. When working with large sample files in Propellerhead's Reason, the P4 platforms tend to go out of sync over time, whereas the AMD Athlon/Athlon XP platforms do not seem to have issue.

I cannot confirm this as I do not have an Intel based system, but I can tell you that my AMD system works flawlessly.
