I'm on a budget, but I've been looking to upgrade from my Yamaha EG112 (I think it's the same as the Pacifica 112). It has been a great learner guitar over the past two years, but the pickups have become noisy... and I figure that if I'm going to spend money to replace the pickups... well, I might as well just spend a little extra and get a better guitar instead.
So I've been looking at the Fender Standard Fat Strat for $400, and the Deluxe Fat Strat for $490. But lately I've been wondering if maybe I'm just in love with the "Fender" logo on the headstock... you know, because all of my guitar idols have used Fender Stratocasters and Marshall amps, so it seems like the natural choice, right?
But that's necessarily the best reason to buy something, so I'm trying to explore other options. I can get a Peavey Limited EXP ST at a store near me for around $300, and I'd still have some money leftover to go towards a new amp. So my question is... has anybody here used this guitar, and is it any good? Are Peavey guitars generally pretty good? The most important things to me are 1. nice clean tone, 2. versatility, 3. durability. Can I get that from a $300 guitar?
