Farce of Nature
I've noticed that the garbage that Hewlett Packard tries to pass for a decent computer is built in such a way that it makes it next to impossible to try to switch out components. For example, I needed to take out a floppy drive out of an HP to install on an older computer and I got so pissed off that I tore into the other components, totally annihilating the wiring for the on/off switch.

Are all computers this bad? I'm asking because I plan to drop serious cash into a pc setup just for recording (I'm considering the Athlon route). I want to know how much aggravation I will be up against to replace drives and soundcards.

Many brand names have computers which are actually a breeze to (dis)assemble. I've professionally worked with Compaq and IBM computers and many times I didn't have to use any tools to switch parts.

One thing that really annoyed me with Compaqs especially is that parts often can't be changed for parts from other Compaq series. The disk drives have a different shaped eject button for instance so it will fit in only one type of case.
No standard parts = much higher costs when replacing because they can charge you anything they want.

Build your own.

IBM's current stuff is hell to work on. They have proprietary everything. My dad's been fiddling with one for awhile for his friend, and the damn thing is a total pain in the ass.

I agree. Build your own, or find someone to do it for you. (damn I'm gonna start my own business building computers. In a barn. Put them in cowprint boxes. Oh wait that's been done.)

Dude, build your own, it is not that difficult. Do some research here and buy from Directron or NewEgg....you´ll build a kickass pc for the fraction of a good Dell...
