notebook (or some paper thing if I don't have it with me) for recording, I'll type it out in word and then print it... my handwriting sucks.

Depends on where I am. I use notepad (loads up much faster) when I'm at my PC or laptop and paper if I'm not. I usually tend to keep backups of all my lyrics on word (and backed up to a CD) in case I lose data.

I always use word for several reasons:

it knows how to spell

I can read its handwriting better

its easy to rearrange, since my ideas don't always flow out in the right order.

I can email it back and forth to myself so i can work on it anywhere I go vrs carrying crap around.

Yeah I like both! However you sound like me. I email myself as well when I'm at work or at some other destination. I get really frustrated though with paper sometimes. I think I think to hard about it. Word.

never....never....ever....write lyrics on used toilet paper. blehhhh

my song book is this old "Composition" book that i had since high school. it was supposed to be a notebook for my chemistry class, but of course i never took any chem notes in it. it's quad-ruled which is kinda neat, so most of the stuff i've written with the book "sideways" so i have a wider page instead of a longer one. and i use a pencil since i like to scribble drawings before i start writing lyrics, just out of habit.

I had an ex who trashed all my lyric books after we broke up. I was around 20 or 21. Boy was she mad when she found out that I had backups of all my lyrics on word documents spaced across a whole boxfull of floppy disks (now that's ancient).

I just started leasing a new powerbook - required by the school I attend - that came with the newest office suite. I have almost completely gone paperless, using Word notebooks for songs. Its just so easy to keep everything sorted: I can have a tab for notes about the song, a tab for the first draft, first rewrite, first arrangement, etc. It just makes organizing my ideas so much more convenient. Not to mention I think a lot faster than I write, often times I'll forget an idea in the time it takes to write it down. Since I type so much faster than I write, its just the best of every world.

i prefer dropping down rough ideas on paper though, 'cause sometimes you could write down other stuff such as the pitch, rythem, etc with the lyrics. :) coz i usually come up lots of different words and idea so i just scribble all untill i get the best one. and i could always look back my pevious ideas if i change my mind!

I've tried both and found that when writing lyrics the words seem to flow better through a pen or pencil rather than a computer keyboard. Of course, many times the words just come to me when I am trying to work something out on the guitar and no writing is involved. Later on I "fine tune" the lyrics from memory and type them on the computer.
