A mastering engineer in a "mastering room" with mastering monitors and mastering equipment Cost of this room....lots more than a Finalizer, or plug ins on your home PC. That's why they charge. Thats why they make a good living when incredible recording /mixing engineers send them their work.
IF you are not planning on marketing in a big way, or you are demo-ing go for the Finalizer route. Of course they will never do the same thing, but you won't fool yourself into thinking this will you?
I own lots of gear including a Finalizer 96K that I can put the polish on with. I would never send it to do mass production. Just to give me an idea what a song "could" sound like. ...ah....a demo.
The other thing that I think people get mixed up with (no pun intended...well maybe now that I read it over) is that it is an "icing" unit not a mix unit. Theoretically the unit shouldn't be fired up until the mix is done. Then again, someone will say, why not. Especially if they don't own any eq's or compressors or the like.
My ranting opinion. It's been a while since I've been on the board so I thought I would start with a bang.
Thanks for listening
