Owners of the 788

Hi,

I have been considering getting a digital HDD recorder for a while and I have been looking at my options lately. I am looking for a 24 bit capable machine and came acrossed the Tascam 788 yesterday. It seems to have everything a beginner would want in a digital recorder. My question to those who own it is:

How do you rate the quality of the recordings?
Has it been reliable (I saw a couple threads that look like they are having problems with it)

How does it compare to say the Roland VS890 or Korg D12?

If eight tracks and 256 virtual tracks are enough for you, there's nothing better. The compititon is getting closer with lower prices for 16 track Akai's and Yamaha's.

A few of my songs are at mp3.com (search for John Malcolm Penn). Also search for 'Station 788' while your there for mp3's of other 788 users.
 
If 8 tracks are enough, it's pretty good. There are a lot of great things you can do with the 788. Since I got my machine in May of last year, though, there have been 5 Version upgrades to the machine, and there is a new one that apparently costs $30 because it adds features to the 788 rather than just fixes bugs. The other upgrades were all bug fixes. One of the upgrades required you to send TASCAM a $30 deposit on the new chip so that THEY could send you an upgrade that fixed the bugs in YOUR machine, that THEY made, and YOU just purchased. 5 upgrades in a year tells you a little something right there. But, I don't think there is a compact digital studio with all the fucntions of the 788 that MOST LIKELY WOULDN'T have equal or more problems. Seriously though, for all I know, maybe that's just standard in the electronic world to purchase a machine and have to upgrade it's operating software every two months, AND, when the operating system is improved within one month of you purchasing your machine, you can then order ANOTHER upgrade and pay extra $$$ for it.

I'm actually not being sarcastic. I think that may really be the way it works with every company.
