Overrated...alot of the wankers...I love fast playing, but it has to be in context.

Underrated...I don't know...Iommi kicks ass as a riff-meister...I love good riffs. Not a spectacular lead player, but I don't listen to Sabbath for solos...I like catchy riffs.

Didn't you say MetalHead28 was an overrated wanker?

I'm sure it was you.

He had a crazy collection of instruments and not just guitars. He would hunt for weeks to find a sound and recorded with many many guitars. I saw him live a few times but of all the guys I would like to have met and worked with that I'll never have the chance it would be him.

As I heard it he came to Carvin via Steve Vai who got his break with Zappa in the first place. The list of now days greats that went through the Mothers is quite an Alumni. Every one from Llowell George to Steve Vai. This
Makes interesting reading. Some very well respected names in there...

Me, too. I got to see him a few times; every show was great. I think my fave was the Joe's Garage tour.

BTW, I'll be going to the Zappa Plays Zappa show next month (Dweezil and an all-star band), and Steve Vai will be playing with them.

Highly overrated: Hendrix
Overrated: Satriani

Highly overlooked: Jeff Beck
Overlooked: Neal Nagaoka

Agree?

I'll probably get neg rep for his but I reckon some of the most over rated guitarists incude:
Angus Young - he's not bad but he is way over rated
Eric Clapton
BB King

I'm not about to neg you but I have to stand up for one of those three. BB King has to be up there as an innovator. You have to remember what he did AND when he did it. BB was ahead of his time. A lot like Louis Armstrong people judge him on his latter output and don't recognise the value of his ground breaking style at the time he was doing it. Without Satchmo there would be no Jazz, Without BB there would be no electric blues at least as it is today. Aside from that I have often pondered which band I would play in if I had to do my last ever gig. It's a toss up between BB King's band of the 1980's and any of James Brown's bands. Those guys could move some air.

Can you beat 44 years playing and still in "pentatonic scamper" mode? ;^)

Yeah, 51 years of it. It has always amazed me how people fall for smoke and mirrors.

Most the guys mentioned so far I like or at least respect, so let me think of who might be overrated..............

Esteban.

this is silly. no one is overrated. if anyone was, it sure wouldn't be hendrix. that man soared. he's transmitting but are you tuned in to receive?

How about 38 years of merely strumming chords--no Travis or other style of fingerpicking? And [I know I'm advertising my ignorance] what is "pentatonic scamper" mode anyway?

Does that gain me "overrated" status?

I was just doing a little research on King and was surprised to find out that his favorite singer of all-time is Frank Sinatra.

Why surprised Sinatra was a true genius. The Sinatra at the Sands album is still one of my favorites. Brilliant Quincey Jones arrangements as well and the Basie band in full swing. :)

hrmm over rated.

eddie van halen.. sure he can rip.. but just about everything he did was incredibly cheezy..

i'm gonna second santana.. just don't see anything special about him at all.

as for under rated or under appriciated...

i have alot of respect for david gilmour.. you never really hear his name mentioned very often when talking about great guitarists.. but the simplicity and the ambience he creates is far more impressive to me then a cheezy metal solo a la van halen.

some other guitarists that are more "unknown" rather than under apreciated are

omar rodrigez-lopez (at the drive in/the mars volta) guy has some serious skills and he's not afraid to venture into lots of dissonance.. amazing.

dave knudson (minus the bear) seriously my hero .. melodic tapping lines.. amazing guitar riffs.. loops .. i dunno this guy is seriously innovative.. he deserves some props.

Pete Townesend. --overrated and gay

Eric Johnson---------overrated and almost gay

Underrated:

Donald "Buck Dharma" Roser from Blue Oyster Cult - coming from a country background and playing heavy metal, he has a sound and style unlike anyone else.

Nils Loftgren - known now just as "springsteens guitarist", people forget his long solo carear and incredible sound & style.

Lindsey Buckingham - I put him here because all I ever hear was "Peter Green was way better!". Well - I agree, so fucking what? Buckingham is a damn fine guitarist who doesn't get any respect, and he deserves some.

Overrated:

Tony Iomi - yeah I like some of his licks, but come on - he is NOT the god that so many think. A decent guitarist, no more.

Whomever plays in Motley Crue - see Tony Iomi above.

Stevie ray Vaughn - perhaps the most over rated rock/pop guitarist in history. Not to say that he wasn't any good, he was. But he was at best a decent Hendrix imitator who played the same 10 riffs into the ground.

Overated -

Satriani and Vai.

Underated -

Gilmour and King (Albert, not BB)

Ok some people in here are nuts.

David Gilmour, Albert King, Jeff Beck .... UNDERRATED???

WTF?

These guys are acknowledged masters by the entire guitar community, AND they've enjoyed some great commercial success (Gilmour obviously a ridiculously huge amount).

Now, for my opinion, I'll second the nomination for Santana being overrated. I really want to like him because he seems like a nice guy, but I don't see or hear anything special about his guitar playing.
