Yes - the drums are a better volume now, gives it some more punch....

Hey Joey,

Just giving the latest mix a spin...sounds great. Drums seem fine (guess they were low before?). Definitely a more contemporary sound to this one - less judas priest and more seattle perhaps.

Anyway, guitars sound great...tight as hell. The Toni I. SG sounds pretty slick man. Nice job :D!

I am so happy with that guitar, it plays like a dream. Yeah, I guess this is a slightly more modern style than the last couple of songs.
Appreciate your comments!
:):)

Your cymbals sound too tinny and brittle. A little too much reverb on your kick drum. Distorted guitars sound kind of weak. They could use some low end boosting. Vocals are excellent. Bass is a little undefined but is definitely present. Not my style but good song.

I agree about the cymbals, definitely need better samples there. I don't wanna put too much low end on the guitars 'cos they would interfere with the bass, I'm quite happy with them as they are. Ive got a room reverb on the whole kit, 'cos I was looking for some depth. Appreciate your comments!

Great song, Joey, one of your better compositions. Songwriting and performance are top notch.

I'm listening to the 2nd mix and there's not much room for improvement. I like the bass as it is. Solid room-filling foundation, giving a huge base to build upon. Leave the definition for the guitars...

I hear what some people are saying about the drums, particularly teh ride cymbal. I'd also say pull back on the click of the kick, but I understand you've gotta make the mix work on earbuds, too. :D

Great song, man!!

Yeah - it's amazing how much bass you can trim off a guitar track to allow for the bass/kick to get through. I love the oomph of my Marshall but sadly I have to mix for the song. Ray commented on a preliminary mix that I didn't even need bass - lol - so you can imagine how much I had to remove.....

My bass player has a Standard SG - it has a nice tone but takes me a bit to warm up to the neck. Once I warm up though it sings - as it does on your track.

:D:cool::D:cool:

Really enjoyed doing this one 'cos it just seemed to flow right out of me without me thinking too much about it, but I'm sure most of you guys know how that is...;) Some guys at work pissed me off and I went home and wrote this. I'll be using other samples for the cymbals, but cutting back on the click in the kick (hey, that rhymes...:D) would make it disappear a little under the bass. I think though for heavy stuff it fits.
Thanx for the great comments!

True, Gerry, you just have to avoid the mud down low.
Hey, you're a Strat-man playing an SG??:D
No, but the necks are totally different. I love my SG's flat wide neck and the 24 frets. It also has the lowest action of all my axes. Guess it all depends on the style you play.

Cool song Joey. Whoever said this is sounds like a mix of Maiden with 90's rock nailed it. I always feel like I'm hearing a hint of Maiden in your stuff. Great guitars and vocals. I think the bass could use more definition. It's plenty there and rumbly, but I'd like to hear more articulation. The drums do sound too compressed. The performance programming is great, but something is off with the sound. They're loud enough, but I'm not feeling the kick or the rest of the kit. The kick and snare aren't driving the song like they should be.

The intro tells the whole story: The kick and snare sound a little too drum machine like. The reverb isn't helping much - it's kind of metallic and unnatural sounding. The drums sound one-dimensional, but still wet, which is a weird thing to have happen. This carries into the rest of the song. The cymbals are kind of tinny and brittle, but that may be more a result of the 160kbps MP3 compression. Cymbals take a beating from file compression - especially cymbal samples.

Go back to square one with the drum samples. At least maybe try a different snare and cymbals, try a different reverb, less compression on the drums, and put it up at full-bore 320kbps with www.lightningmp3.com so we can hear it in all it's glory. :D

Man... Being a drummer, the first thing I usually notice about a song is the drums (or lack thereof), but I couldn't keep my ears from those guitars on this tune, man. Very nice work layering the guitars. Loved em'.

After I got over the guitars, and was able to listen to the rest of the song, one of the first things I noticed, sadly, is about 16 seconds into the song, when the grunge kicks in, I was wholeheartedly anticipating an explosion of cymbal / kick goodness on the downbeats, but didn't get it. Kind of like in Metallica's "Sad But True" in the very beginning of the song, on the downbeats "BOOM!" Cymbal / Kick / Guitars...

The drum's cymbals, to my ears, have an effect of sucking the song's potential power out of it, and kind of creating a void where the power should have been, and for a song so well written and recorded, is kind of a shame.

Anyway... Maybe that's not what you're going for, and if so, then honestly, I can't find anything else wrong with the song. Guitars and bass and vocals are way above par. Getting more power out of the drums would probably put this song into the "I want to spend money for this" category. This sort of genre is exactly what I love listening to. I wish they would play more stuff like this on the radio.

Great job. Got a site where I can listen to some of your other stuff?

That's great criticism, Greg, I know I can depend on your examples when it comes to the drums. That's stuff that I really wasn't noticing before. I think I'll remove the verb on the kit first of all and try to get it to sound more human. I'll have to turn the compression down and find better hats and cymbals too.
Thanx for all the help and the nice comments! :)

Thanx man, those are some great comments and suggestions!
I'm actually more of singer than a guitar player, but it's nice when someone says they good.:) Yeah, I'll have to see about the drums, 'cos they're nice and clear, but not providing the guts the song needs.

Best place to listen to my stuff would be on Soundclick. You can also download my last CD for free there. But I have a myspace page too. Links are in my signature.
Appreciate your advice!

:)

Great work, hermano! I agree completely on Greg's appreciation. But man, let me tell you. You rock completely on those guitars and vocals. I don't know why the hell you are not on tour with a major band. I don't understand it. :)
