Opinions on Rack

Looks good Blue Jinn. Thanks for the picture. Some of those racks are humongous I've noticed. Way more than you need.

Does that rack have a front stabilizer on the bottom. I mean like a foot on the floor that sticks out to keep anything that is top heavy from tipping forward. Or is it just straight up and down sturdy enough. Just another thing I wonder about.

I've managed to fill it up though, and two smaller racks, and somebody is supposed to give me another 6' one when he gets a round tuit.

It has two big feet sticking out the front to stabilize it.

I mean the depth of them. But the one you have looks a bit thinner than some of the others I've seen. Some have doors on them and are about 3 feet deep.

PDP-11s an me go back many years - love that machine

Not a great pic but here is one 6ft PDP-11 rack, this one has a back. It isn't portable if that is the goal. You might try DRMO too, a lot of military comm gear comes in nice rack cases with handles etc... http://www.govliquidation.com/auction/view?id=2840566&convertTo=USD You have to really know how to search, like that one looks like it has a nice new rack for $150, but note it's 4 pallets and over 1 ton of stuff....

So do you know 11's? I programmed them in assembly for about 10 years or so. RT, and RSX plus a home grown real time kernel. (PAX)

I have 3 of the 6' black racks (H-960's if i remember correctly) and a couple of half racks at work. I've thought of getting the halfs when they get surplused.

Don't really know that much about PDP-11's. I did have a DEC Rainbow for a little bit, and a Pro 380 that I used to learn a little UNIX from. That got me interested in DEC, and I knew a guy who retired on his work on the Alpha, but otherwise, no, and having the rack I was always a bit interested in what went in it. Plus wasn't the first Star Wars movie made using PDP-11's (or was it 8's) to control the camera movements during the battle at the Death Star?

There are several different Tascam rolling racks. The one my BR-20 sits in has 14U up top in an adjustable tilting section, and there are 8U fixed below.

Keep in mind that you want to be able to get to the back of the electronics so they have to be accessible. Plus, it is a good idea for cooling. Even the Ampex consoles are open in the back.

I think the SKB/Gator gig racks are great products, but the are a lot of $$$.

It really is too bad you're not closer...now I have TWO Ampex consoles and that Russ Lang console.

Another idea: you might call around to radio stations or educational institutions and see if they have surplus, or put in a WTB craigslist post or something. There are people with this stuff sitting around. Where are you located again? I could put a post up on the Ampex list that you are looking for one. I'm pretty sure it would be cheaper than a gig rack.

BUT, the gig rack would also be a fine solution.

EDIT

I see you are in Mass. Le me know if you want help looking in your area.

Hey Sweetbeats,
I am looking for a couple TASCAM rack exactly like yours. I have one as well and want a couple matching ones. Any ideas where to look or what they are called?

Thanks

Chuck
