I'm thinking about putting my AG 440 in one of these http://www.guitarcenter.com/Gator-GRC-Pop-up-Console-Rack-546162-i1167607.gc
at least temporarily. I was wondering what anyone thought or if anyone had any opinion on it at all.

I like the compactness of it and if I happen to bring it somewhere I could cover it.
Also it's hard to find the right rack for it. I'm just wondering if any sees any problem with the idea.

The transport is going to sit up top, flat and the 4 channel electronics are going down on the bottom part. I don't necessarily like the electronics low to the ground but it should be alright.

This is the one I have it in now. The problem is the channels and the transport were screwed directly into the wood. If the holes are not all stripped already they're going to be. Secondly it's bigger than it has to be. Though it looks good. It's hard finding the right rack. I could get a straight up one but they're expensive for a good one. I'll take any suggestions.

I think you should leave it

tascam roll around racks come up sometimes on ebay

what you have is fine

better than that skb thing

you can take wooden dowells

or wood food skewers (i steal them from the kitchen)

and some wood glue,

and glue a skewer into the hole,

cut it and sand it,

then drill the screw back in like new

it doesn't look that much bigger than it needs to be

Thanks for the input Falken. I'll think about it a little more before I dive into it.

On the Tascam roll around racks is there a place to mount the channel electronics? I forget what they look like.

It might be a good idea though to wait and see what else comes up. You're right.

O. U R right....the tascam rack probably wont fit all that.

By the way,

that is a dope machine.

here is a pic of my four track

I was looking into similar racks, but I think I've decided to build my own system. Well not just me, I'm not handy with stuff like that.

Yeah, the Otari is nice Falken. I hope it's still running good for you.

Another thing is the back of the transport is open. There is no cover, all the electronics are exposed so it needs to be encased somehow.

Dodgeaspen, I thought about building one too but it seems like too much of a hassle for this. I'd have to borrow all the tools and it would get involved. But... I could I guess. I like the design of the original Ampex consoles.

There are several different Tascam rolling racks. The one my BR-20 sits in has 14U up top in an adjustable tilting section, and there are 8U fixed below.

Keep in mind that you want to be able to get to the back of the electronics so they have to be accessible. Plus, it is a good idea for cooling. Even the Ampex consoles are open in the back.

I think the SKB/Gator gig racks are great products, but the are a lot of $$$.

It really is too bad you're not closer...now I have TWO Ampex consoles and that Russ Lang console.

Another idea: you might call around to radio stations or educational institutions and see if they have surplus, or put in a WTB craigslist post or something. There are people with this stuff sitting around. Where are you located again? I could put a post up on the Ampex list that you are looking for one. I'm pretty sure it would be cheaper than a gig rack.

BUT, the gig rack would also be a fine solution.

EDIT

I see you are in Mass. Le me know if you want help looking in your area.

Great ideas Cory. I've been on the Ampex list, I've just been reading.Maybe I'll make a shout out for one on there too.

If it were my machine, I'd just build a pair of rack boxes out of 3/4" plywood. One for the electronics and one for the transport. A front and a back lid for each. The transport lid, of course, will have to have sides at least a couple of inches tall to allow sufficient relief for the reel hubs, headstack and tape path components that stand above the deck plate. The rest can be flush mounted, given proper depth and design of the rack boxes. Dividing the weight and bulk in two also makes each part fairly manageable to move.

Cheers,

Otto

I've thought about that too. I thought at first about getting three road rack cases to make them easy to carry around. 2 four space for the channels and 1 10 space for the transport.

Thanks for the input Otto.

I picked up a PDP-11 rack from a guy in CA. Old computer and or communications racks can sometimes be found for a good price, I'll post some pix. One of my racks was used with some police dispatch, and I simply removed the side covers to get more usable rack space.

Hey BlueJinn, I've been looking at those types of racks too. I forgot they are for computers too. I was thinking video. But if you look them up new in the A/V sites they big bucks.

Yeah, post some pictures. I'm still trying to figure out what to do. I had an opportunity to get one of those stand up racks but it has no sides and I didn't want the back of the transport to be completely exposed. I know it needs to breath but I'd rather have at least the sides of it covered.

I like your original idea because you could haul it around and do some location recording projects. I used to do that with my old 3340 and 80-8 years ago. I had a foam lined case for each machine and would load them in the back of my (then) Datsun station wagon. Imagine the quality you could get with a 1" 8 track location rig. ;)

I thought that if I were to bring it to a friends to record drums and left it there for a while it would be good to have it covered up. Also I'll be moving so it may help then. But other than that I wouldn't be taking around too much.

Not a great pic but here is one 6ft PDP-11 rack, this one has a back. It isn't portable if that is the goal. You might try DRMO too, a lot of military comm gear comes in nice rack cases with handles etc... http://www.govliquidation.com/auction/view?id=2840566&convertTo=USD You have to really know how to search, like that one looks like it has a nice new rack for $150, but note it's 4 pallets and over 1 ton of stuff....
