we are talking about rockets on space shuttles here... you bet they're a hell of alot louder than commercial jet engines...
anyways thats what c9-2001 asked about was NASA rockets (I assumed he meant on space shuttles)...
I dunno who or when the conversation on rockets switched from NASA shuttles to commercial jets... maybe I missed something here.

actually in the world of car audio, a 300 watt amp is tiny, and pretty much worthless.
more head room is better.
and take into fact that average/decent car speakers are around 150 watts each, and subs are 300-1500
you get a couple subs and 4 speakers, and you need some heafty amps to fully power them.
HEADROOM is the key word here, just because you have 5000 watts of power, it doesn't mean your always using it, i don't think you'd EVER use the full power of it.

i work at the airport, out on the taxiways with the planes
we always wear earplugs or headsets.
once i didn't have my headset in, and i couldn't get my earplugs in in time, and i had to marshal in a plane without ear protection
it was just a very small twin prop plane, it had turbines so it made a lot of noise, but it wasn't a full blown jet engine, and it was LOUD!
when it was at its closest to me, before it shut its engines down, my ears slowly started ringing until it was a high pitched screach and it hurt a lot.
but then again i was putting the chalks in, and about 10 feet from the damn engine.

They have stereo competitions where the goal is most dbs not clarity. I was reading some articles on the rigs and they are pretty impressive from an engineering standpoint. They put out enough power to kill anyone who was actually in the car when they cranked them up. They have to use tie straps just to keep the doors from blowing off. The current world record is 172 SPL.

That's true, but once you attain high fidelity, you will most likely have several hundred if not thousands of watts of power.

You bet. I was discussing hearing damage from car stereo abuse and everyone else was bragging about how many dB they could endure without passing out.

My point EXACTLY!! Remember C9 came in here oohing and aahing over 24/96 playback in a truck with a 5000 watt amp system and I merely pointed out the incongruity of that situation.

thats no where near full power.. thats RMS and it is pushing that much on a daily basis..280-300amp alternator, with 5 batteries total..ambi said:

Yeah right... By the time you reach that .5% THD, you've blown all your spkrs and your probably gonna be deaf.
At lower volumes though, like Tex said, the extra wattage helps deliver sound that is unattainable by a smaller amp. Unless you've spent MANY thousands of dollars on it.
