Those JBL's are getting some good reviews. I think I'm going to call the guy unless someone stops me....like, soon.

I had a pair of those. I would say they can be good for reference when working out details in mid range frequencies but not for a full range main monitor IME. They have the same drivers as the NS-10's and the same lack of low end. I ended up giving them to a friend as I found the Event TR8's to give me the same clarity but with more substantial low end for an alternate monitor.

$300 is what I paid for my used KRK G2-8's (my main monitors) and I have not found a reason to upgrade yet. When I do it will likely be in the $5000 range because the time I have already spent learning these and the way I can get mixes to translate on other systems is worth more to me than a small step upgrade.

Keep in mind that a small driver can only move so much air. I have no experience with the NS-40M's but I would guess they would be best with the addition of a subwoofer. I even use a sub with my KRK 8's to find problematic frequencies in the really low range. Plus it is almost necessary when working with the Hip Hop clients I have.

I found my sub after reading a comparison/review on it at another forum. I already had a $900 1980's home theater subwoofer that was just too much. This one was just perfect and cheap.

When I was monitor shopping, I listened to a bunch side by side at a GC competitor (was it Mars? can't remember now). What I do remember was even with a side by side test in a store, it was difficult to judge performance. You can hear the difference, but whether one was better than other was hard to determine. I remember wondering if I was confusing clarity with a hyped upper end. Maybe I should get flat dull sounding monitors. Then you had all the idiots in the store cranking amps and banging drums and it was just ridiculous to try and shop for monitors.

I ended up buying the Event ALP5's and while they sound good, they have no low end. They got relegated to critical listening of individual tracks and not really for overall mixing. For that I use old Bose bookshelf speakers with a sub.

Maybe it's time I upgrade my monitors too. :o

Weird, I didn't provide any link. NS-10m's were the industry standard in every professional recording studio for decades and still are in some respect, especially for live rock mixing. (not so much anymore since electronica) they are not used to make things sound "good" They are used to focus in on the particular aspects of your mix. So really they make a great second pair of monitors. If your looking for just one set of speakers to do it all you might want something else.

P.S. If you just want all around great monitors get Adam a7x. Listen to them next to any speaker in their price range. They are awesome.

On another note, I just went to Best Buy and bought a pair of speaker stands....they sound great. :D

While I was there, I was ready to buy these: KRK ROKIT 8 G3 Monitor Speaker (RP8-G3) : Speakers & Monitors - Best Buy Canada

...but it turns out the price is for just ONE speaker. Who the hell sells or buys just one speaker???? :eek:
 
Maybe I misread. I thought there was a guy with KRK 8's for sale for $300 too.
 
Wait. You're right. One of my earlier posts mentions KRK's. I don't even remember that. I'll have to go back and check it out.

Got 'em!!!! Holy shit! This guy owns a studio and these were pretty much brand new in a box. They're awesome!!! On top of that, he's seen me playing in many bands over the years (though I don't know him) and treated me like a rock star. I got a great deal because of that. I was almost embarrassed at how nice he was to me, like as if I was actually someone important. :laughings:.

We were actually haggling in opposite directions, he was trying to take less money, and I was trying to give him more. It was pure comedy. :D

I have to get used to these things. They're so full sounding that I'm going to have to be careful not to turn the bass down on my next couple of tunes, I'm so used to my other 5 inch home stereo speakers.

OK, I think I'm going to jerk off now. :)
