You can get a good sound with whatever software or mike you use starting out. If you sound good live, have a good arrangement and use the mike skillfuly... the recording will sound good. It'll just be lo-fi or hi-fi, depending. $12 computer mike = low-fi. $300 invested carefully in mike and preamp can get you high-fi.

Also remember that most PC mikes are tailored for vocal response. They are made to be talked into. Rapping is basically talking, so it shouldn't be that bad.

I had a girl sing to one of my songs and all she had was a cheap PC mic and cheap sound card. It didn't sound nearly as bad as I thought it would.

But having a proper vocal mic/preamp/interface is always the best option.
