OK. Cool super-cheap kick drum mic alert.

What I've always found is that a badly tuned, crappy kick (no matter how you try and tune it) has that bouncing-basketball sound when recorded, no matter what decent mic you record it with or where you position the mic.

On the otherhand, I've found that a badly-tuned, top-notch kick can sound OK when recorded with a decent mic in a good position.

With that said, I've only 1X had a good experience using a D112. I hate using that mic myself, regardless of how good the results other engineers I know have gotten with it!

OK R.E., don't make me come over there (where ever there is).:D

track...just shut his cable off!!

hey...and I know you have some Oktava MC012... and I would guess *maybe* some AKG451's ..or have used them.

How do you think the Oktava, the 451's and the MXL603 compare with each other... (using cardiod as a common basis)?

As I said, other engineers can get good results with it somehow (must be in the mix), but I sure can't! I've just never been able to get a good enough balance (a balance I prefer) between the umff, punch, and attack wth a D112 on kick... And it has NOTHING to do with position! No matter what the position, one of the elements was not enough!

So yes! Please come-over here and show me how you do it Track Rat! :D

Another very nice kick drum candidate is sennheiser's e602...please try it out.

How does this mic sound on floor toms, especially 16"-18" size?

Glenn

well, I haven't tried it on a floor tom as I've been using recorderman's 3 mic technique. So no close mics at all other than the kick (on the outside head, so not really all that close).

However, one of the kick drums I'm working with is a 16" although it's deeper than 18". I think it's a 20". And the superlux sounds great on it.

Judging by the response curve, it should do fine. It passes pretty strong signal (about the same as a '57 in signal strength) with an extended low response; should be hip as a floor tom mic.

Hey, for $25, give it a go. You'll find SOMETHING you like it on.

Chris
