ohhhh man! love me some hollowbody!

so i took a trip to my guitar center and started playing with the ibanez artcore and the epiphone studio dot.
i really liked the epi dot a lot. it was an all white epi hollowbody and it was wonderful!
i didnt play too much around on the artcore because i havent heard many good things about ibanez.
so i was just wondering...
is 300+ worth to spend on one of these guitars or should i save and get an amazing one?
 
We walk a border between self-indulgence/guilt. and real need. Where that border is may depend a great deal on what guitar(s) you have now.

For me, I try to buy guitars that stop me from looking for a while. And since I have three guitars and none of them is crap, I don't have a real need. If I were in your shoes, I would save up for the amazing guitar, assuming your present collection is satisfactory and does all you need it to do.
 
Did you try the Taylor T5 while you were at GC? That is a hollow body to save up for. I picked one up the other day and it does sound great. I run it through my Marshall and my accoustic amps.

I've heard a lot of good things about those.
 
Look around for used Ibanez Artstars. The Artcore series is a new line made in China at rock bottom prices, the Artstars were made in Korea and were much pricier guitars, but because they had a more limited run, they don't have a huge resale value because they are largely unknown. For example, I nailed an Artstar AS120 (es335 clone) that retailed new in the late 90's for $1000-$1200 and got it for $400 used, and it truly rivals late model es335's (I imagine a vintage 335 would be superior).

I've got to ask where are you hearing things??? Try finding a company that makes as many guitars anywhere near as well as they do for that price range. As for the artcores specifically I've heard tons of good stories about those, however I would rather save for a more expensive hollowbody just because I have gotten to that point where I've spoiled myself with guitars.

You have to go play some more guitars, and then consider if the price difference is worth it for YOU.

Ok... I have to say I'm the proud owner of a brand new artcore 105nt.... i had to set up the action the way i like it and get the intonation just right. but after that... I have nothing but good things to say about it.. the 5 piece neck is soo sweet.. on the neck pickup tone volume turned down... smokey jazz bar here i come...you should try em out.. dont let the price tag detter you (high or low)

butttt im in a pop punk band.

and i played the epiphone studio dot through a crate tube amp (kinda like the one i have) and it sounded amazing.
the distortion was amazing, and clean was even better.

im in a pop punk band, and i know no one uses these guitars for pop punk, but shittttt i might as well start.
 
Tom delonge's guitar is a variation of an es-335, as is the dot. I'd have to say he falls in to the pop punk category.
 
Not to beat a dead horse but...if I did'nt have way too many guitars already,I'd have an Artcore.I simply can't believe the value.
 
I have an Artcore AFS75TD and it plays great and sounds nice. I'm a bass player by trade so I don't play too many guitars but I can say this thing really fits the bill for me as a songwriter.

i dunno what kind of pop punk you listen to but big bodied guitars definitely define the sound for me.
 
I love my 335 :D I started sleeping with it but the strings kept poking the wife so the wife had to go.
 
I have to say I am not impressed by the Artcores. They are *beautiful* guitars that have all the right features design-wise, but I wasn't inpressed by their tone at all. I think I played every Artcore in 2 of the largest GC's in the world, and wound up with an Epiphone Casino by Samick, which has served me quite well. They aren't as beautiful as the artcores, but I prefer the sound. I played a Schecter semi-hollowbody that I liked a lot, but I needed a real hollowbody at the time.-Richie
 
Here's me and my Gretsch at a festival over Memeorial Day weekend. Gotta love that great hollowbody feedback.

but i think i have my heart set on the epi unless someone else has any other suggestions in that 300 dollar range?
 
I have an Artcore hollowbody - increadable guitar... for any price. But that's just my opinion. Go to GC in the middle of the day in the middle of the week and plan on spending a few hours there. Try every style of guitar in there - from the cheapest solid body single coil to most expensive hollow humbucker in every amp...

then you'll have a good idea what you like. Or end up more frustrated than ever. :rolleyes:
 
Just to clarify, although I was defending the artcores, I do like the epiphone hollowbodies, not any other epiphones, but the epiphone hollowbodies are really good for the price as well.

There has never been a better time than now to get a decent guitar cheap.Robots,computers and yes,cheap foreign labor have been a real boon for the guitar player on a budget.

I think I can get a better guitar for $300 today than I could 25 years ago.
