I recently recorded a song using 14 tracks. I have a gadgetlabs wave/824 soundcard and when i play back the song to mix, i can only listen to 8 tracks at a time.
I know a friend who has a simple soundblaster and we can here everything on his. Are my settings wrong? or is this card that limiting that it cant do what a cheap soundblaster can?

Please help!

When you say you recorded 14 tracks, do you mean tracks or channels? If you used 14 channels, then you need to go to audio/system and in the upper left of the window you'll see a system performance area. The default is 8 channels of audio, but it can handle as many audio channels as your computer can support. Change that selection from 8 to how many channels you need. Again, this is limited to the capabilities of your computer. I have a PII w/128megs of ram, and have handled 16 channels of audio with no problem.

Check it out and post back.

To Lee.....

Thanks for the info!
I did record 14 channels and I figured the trick shortly after posting this thread. I have a PIII 800 with 384mg ram.
How many channels do you guess I could handle?

Hmmmm....gee, I don't know. Just try as many as you can - keep adding channels until you reach the computers limit. My computer handles 16 channels of audio and it's only a PII with 128 megs running at 400mz, so yours could do even more, I suspect. Remember, though, that this applies only to audio. For midi, you're restricted to 16 channels.

Hi Lee,
I just checked out your site at IUMA and WOW! I am very impressed! How did you record your guitar? Was this all done in cubase?

I would love to pick your brain about recording, on a more direct channel. Do you have ICQ?

Please reach me at jwpauze@home.com

Thanx!

Howzit Jeff,

Hey, thanks for listening to my stuff at IUMA! Yes, it was all done in Cubase. I recorded the guitar direct into a Roland UA100 Audio Canvas which is connected to my computer through the USB port. The effects on the guitar were actually added after it was recorded. That's kinda how the VST plug-ins work.

The "band" behind me was created by a program called Band in a Box, but even that music was edited in Cubase (in the midi editor). The strings and other stuff was added in Cubase, although I've learned that they could have been added in Band in a Box.

If you have any questions, I'll be glad to try to answer them. You gotta realize, though, that I'm a real beginner with the recording trip, but whatever I've learned I'll pass on to you. There are some really experienced engineers on this forum that will be able to help you a lot too. That's where I got started, by learning from these guys.

E-mail me from my site at IUMA. I'll try to answer as many questions as I can.

numbers of tracks

Hi,

a PIII 800 with 384mg can handle up to 80 or 90 tracks playback and 4 track recording at a time. What you will end up with depends on your MB and HD and also on your digitalcard. The BX 440 chipset board seems to be the best out there up to 850 Mhz.

Have fun, I am currently building a P3 500 and I will upgrade later with an used CPU.
