I have had very similar results with the 012 and 603. I have usually opted for the 603 with my guitar however I recently did an XY on a customers guitar with the 603 and the 012 and the contrast was very complementary in getting a variety of tone. I just called up Guitar Center and they are shipping me a pair for $99 no cost for shipping. Hard to beat, I can sit in my apartment and sip lemonade :) I have only used the studio's that i am at but now I will have a pair for myself. Thanks for the tip ya'll.

yah whatever dudley, whatever you say.

heheheh.

i just feel i can make fun of him more because i actually know him in person.

Don't make me come over there Darnold, I know where you live. I don't want to have to use my new 012's in an "unconventional way" ;)

I got some MXL603S's for $50 each when Shrieve was having that sale too... and some from 8th Street. :)

I bought a "matched" pair of MK-012 from GC a few weeks back and have since recorded a fiddle and a bagbipe with them.

The fiddle was recorded with a single mic through an RME pre with results I would describe as "it recorded everything with great clarity especially at the high end." I don't know if it was the fiddle or the player but I was picking up so much bow and string noise I had to roll off the high fairly drastically in the mix in order to warm up the sound.

Last night I recorded a bagpipe with the "matched" pair in an XY configuration. As I was recording I was extremely pleased with the tone and the levels for each mic were very close. Are they a matched pair? Who knows? My ears certainly can't tell. However I do trust my ears so tonight when I go back to listen to last night's track I'll either confirm or deny my first impressions.

In any event, they sure are worth a try.

You might check my message in another thread about testing the random two I bought a few weeks back.

At least at 440Hz A, they were bang-on. Presumably I couldn't luck out like that again.:)

I talked to MF about price matching the MK012's at 99 bucks, they said no way in hell could/would they, MF said they discontinued that particular line of mikes and were out of any remaining stock.

Well seeing as GC and MF are owned by the same company, I suspect they "sold" or "gave" all their stock to GC.
