I currently own a Neumann KM184 but sometimes feel the need to tame the upper frequency brightness a bit. I understand that the old KM84 was a little darker sounding.
Now, I've been reading about the Rode NT5. The descriptions seem to suggest that they are similar to a KM184, but a little darker sounding. This leads to the question...does the Rode NT5 sound like a Neumann KM84?

Thanks,
Terry

I'm also interested in the NT-5, for use as an overhead mic mainly, so I'm pretty interested in ppl over here who have some experience with them.

No, the NT5's not going to give the kind of detail the KM84's have. And while the NT'5 are a bit darker, they don't have the color that Neumann's have.

Some alternatives that sound closer to KM84's are the Josephson C42's, the Audix SCX-1's, Oktava MC012's, Studio Projects C4's.

That could also be in the mic pre, AD converters, room acoustic and even cables.

BrettB, for OH's I'd suggest you also consider large condensers instead. Oktava MK319, Studio Projects B1, Red5 Audio RV8, AT 4040. You'll get much more mileage out of budget large condensers than you will from budget small condensers. Much better overall kit sound.
