Not lIkeing my Voice? Is This COmmon?

When i hear my voice i dont like it... but other people hear it and like it?! is this common or is it just people being nice? i always think i sound weird/weak and then i got people saying its fine and people saying its good and people saying its sexy.... is this common does this happen to anyone else...

It's not uncommon to dislike your own voice. I'm not keen on mine.

Getting genuine opinions on your voice (and everything else for that matter) is tough. I've got a couple of people I know I can rely on. Everyone else just says that everything's great regardless.

I think I have a complex regarding my own voice but most people say "I can sing" but if you asked me I would tell you I suck.

I used to not like my own voice but now I'm cool with it. I think as my equipment got better I was able to get it to sound better. Back in my 4 track days I was singing through a 57 and it came out kinda thin so I was a little put off by it. I think since I have been singing more live I have been hearing myself with no effect through the monitors and I got used to it.

i'm the same way about my voice, i dont like hearing it, i always think i sound like a tool. i always like to tell this story: i forget which book i read it in, but john lennon really didn't like the sound of his voice. he'd insist on adding effects to it so that it could mask it. even great voices are self conscious.

Similarly I read an interview with Elliott Smith which was done shortly before he died and when he was asked about the doubling on his voice (which he always did) he said 'I like it because it doesn't sound like me' (or words to that effect).

That sounds familiar.

I don't think I'll ever like my voice, but I will admit I've improved dramatically. Singing is no different than playing a instrument, there's tons of technique involved that needs to be learned and practiced, it's not a natural, innate thing like most people think(Unless you're extremely lucky).

I hate my voice. I used to think it was ok for certain style songs. Now I just don't like it regardless. I hear a melody in my head, and I record it and it sounds terrible to me.

As you can see, it's very common. Most people are surprised the first time they hear their own voice on tape. "That's not how I sound, is it?"

It is really a common thing. I don't really like my singing, but I don't hate it either & I do like to sing.
If you're really into finding out..honest opinions, record your singing & just present it to a few people, not letting them know who it is. CAUTION!!!!!!! ...this can really get brutal on the ego.
If you like singing & no one's telling you to shut up, then just go with what you have & don't worry about it, 'cause it is common.
Besides..look at how many people have made it & are some of the worst singers around. (I was gonna name a few, but that's a big can 'o worms!)

Most people don't like the sound of they're voice in the beginning. Just keep at it and try to "discover " your voice. By this I just mean to find out what you're good at. If you sing enough stuff alone...in the car or shower or whatever, You'll find a style and range that suits you. Tape works too but don't get hung up on effects. You'll wind up using them as a crutch.

A large part of what we hear in our voice comes from the fact that our jaw bone is close to our ear canal, and I hope I can explain this the way I read it on that medical website, but we get vibrations coming off our jaw bone and our ear picks it up. Our voice sounds different to us than what other people hear. Basically, the mic doesn't pick up that extra vibration, so you are hearing it differently when you record it. It's closer to what other people hear, but still colored a bit by the mic, the pre amp, and any eq you put on it. I am the same way, even though I am used to hearing my recorded voice now, I still hate it. It's not so much the sound of my voice than the fact that I am not a very good singer. I have raw talent, but I need to have vocal lessons...

I tried this once, but the person had no clue it wasn't Kermit the Frog.

Of course, I was doing an impersonation of Kermit the Frog doing a cover of "It's Not That Easy Being Green" as a St. Patrick's Day gag, so.... Maybe that's a good thing.... So hard to say.

Ha ha! That's good.


But whatever you do, don't try to get a good impression of your singing by doing karaoke! That crap is setup with so much reverb you will never be able to tell if you are any good or not. I think it's done that way on purpose to mask the horrible singing that inevitably comes with a mic and too much alcohol consumption...

I don't think you could get any more honest opinions than right here...Provide a means for your voice to be heard...and you will get some honest feedback.. Did I say that right? I still can't seem to get used to hearing myself, and Ive been listening to the ol' growler for ...err...many,many, years...It can come in handy though..If a visiter has wore out thier welcome..I just open my mouth and let-ur-fly...they leave shortly...

I noticed alot of people dont read the thread... they jsut read the first post and post off of that.... cuz at about post 12 i said that " I DONT SING I RAP THERES A DIFFERENCE " so most of the tips didnt help thanx anyways lol guess i should expect people not to read the thread next time and ill be more specific My Fault
