how important would you rate the humble microphone in your recording set-up? Lets say, out of 10.
I ask because I intend to record my band live, and would therefore require something like 8 mikes, and want to know how much i should spend on the lot.

thanks

You probably won't have to spend so much... You didn't mention what instruments that will be recorded, but I suspect you'll end up with a bunch of SM57s and maybe a pair of small diafragm condensers like Marshall XML-603s, Rode NT-3 or Oktava MC012..

Instruments : drums (4 mikes), 1 guitar, 1 bass, 1 voc, keyboards (don't need mike).
Are the drum-miking kits any good?
cheers, Meshuggah

The importance of the mic will be directly proportionate to the quality of sound you are expecting...it is the device that will capture all of your sounds....if you start with a bad mic, nothin else (preamp, eq, effects) can help it.....

with that said, when you mean live, do you mean a live show or just the whole band performing at once?.....

kick drum - Audio Technica ATM25 $140
snare drum - sm57 $80
overheads - 2 marshall mxl 603's $150?

bass direct
keyboards direct

guitar - shure sm57

vocals - shure sm57 if a live show
marshall mxl67 if you can get the vocalist isolation

now, what are you recording into?
