normalize

Hi guys - When do you normalize (GT Pro) - once only, often, before submixing...? Thanks.

When you say normalise are you referring to the final mix...

All that normalising does is basically raises the volume of the track by the difference between the loudest peak and what every you normalise to.

You can normalise or use a compressor to get a similar (not the same) result, ie a 'louder' track with peaks 'squished'.

Hmmm... the actual challenge is to *record* it as loud as possible, without noises interference nor distorted (clipping). As we getting better and better using compressor, there won't be no need for normalizing so often anymore But if there is a case when we need to normalize a track, I'll do it *only* once to certain track/s before mixing, OR once on mixing result
But after I got Waves Ultramaximizer, I was glad to erase the word "normalizing" on my mixing dictionary

I'm not familiar with GT pro,but are'nt there other options such as envelopes,compression or automation?

I like the one that says 'Meters Peak+RMS', and 'Peak Hold'.
...And the volume slider of course.

Normalizing serves no useful function that I've ever found - in ANY stage of the process.

Well, it does make it easier for the "less experienced" to "make everything as loud as a comercial CD"...

Paresh, whilst my fellow members knock chunks out of each other and settle old scores, Normalizing is a desructive effect that cannot be reversed without degrading the original signal. Thats why everyone here has a "downer" on on it.

A) I mean higher Noise To Signal Ratio... Loudest against noise floor without getting clipping/distorted

B) ...hhhmmmm... yeah, why would I Well, actualy, on very rare case, I took my best shoot recorded too weak compared to other tracks It's great, close to perfect... just somehow a bit too far from the mic, so few dB quiter than the rest. I could just raise the track's volume, but sometime I *did* the normalize on that track to match other's average level... It's my subjective way of work anyway. I only did it on certain case / track which I know will be okay to do so... in other word...

beautiful explanation. i use TRIM as well as the volume slider and peak+rms meters.

typically, i like to record so that my peaks are hitting pretty good at about -6db. i use to be scared to record that hot (24bit) because of the fear of digital clipping, but i've gotten braver. if i have a track that's peaking pretty good at -9db, i'll bring the TRIM up to +3db so that the peaks are now at -6db.

then i start mixing.

once i get the volumes where i want them (depth), then i start looking to see what i need to compress or eq (height).

once i get the compression and eq where i think i want it, then i start panning (width).

once i get the instrumentation and vocals placed mixed in a stereo field, then i start applying any fx to get more detailed depth perception.

Which Waves Ultramaximizer do you have, L1 or L2? I have the L1 and I am pretty happy with it but I noticed they've recently released the L2 and clam it's God's answer to all mastering and compression issues. Have you had a chance to use it, and is it worth the cheddar they're asking for it????

L2 is a little less harsh than the L1 IMHO.

Overall I think the L2 is a notch better, but I don't know if I'd go out and buy it if I already had the L1.
