cool

no I like the insult to my music you are right in your description.. Makes me proud lol :laughings:
I do make more normal music as well and record normal artists.. once I find some really great musicians to record I'll put up some recordings but none worth it at the mo..

SouthSide You Rock! It seems to me that you have the most kowledge of recording, home or other, and also the most common sense of anyone participating in the forums! Why should any newbie take the advice of a novice over an established real studio owner operator! No bragg, just fact!

I've been around for a long time, though I don't come here very often these days. I just wanted to say that some of these guys -- Richard Monroe, Southside Glen, Darrin_h2000 etc -- have been going out of their way to help newbies, bedroomers, small-scale pros and even established pros for YEARS, over and over again.

Let's not be too sensitive, or self righteous, to avoid thanking them and many other members here for freely sharing good advice -- EVEN if you don't agree with every bit of it.

Thanks fellas.

Yeah your right I'm stupid for being dis-respectful ...:(

I hate to beat a dead horse but if I could borrow your stick for a moment

1. No one anywhere is saying that cheap gear sounds as good as professional gear

2. No one is suggesting not buying the best that you can afford

3. No one is suggesting that the worldy sages know less than mere mortals....thats experience of course they do...but its hard to respect attitude sometimes

4. There is obviously a wide range of users on this forum from all levels so the "one attitude for all" will not work...not all of us want lead by the nose to top professional levels..well not yet thats for sure

but..

I spend little, enjoying what I do...I will upgrade when and where I find it necessary..I spend to a budget which I research and control as tightly as possible, (I havent worked for two years)..I am prolly not alone in some of this

Now if every noob is going to met met with coy, fishing, drag them out of their shell posts..well I dont think they'll give up making music but I wonder how many give up with this forum?

Maybe some of you experienced guys need to rethink why exactly you come here..is for bragging rights? is it to help? for sense of community? a place to show your skills? to nurture talents that resembled yours at some point? or to bounce about forums with your chests puffed out leaping to each others defence?

because you have to wonder...

I stopped reading around the 4th page, haha, but here goes...

Solid post. I've been on here since 05 but I rarely lurk because of the section in bold. Though this site can be and has been extremely helpful. You just gotta try to pick through the egos and find the jewels, ya dig? I doubt anyone started with neves and neumann's just like I didn't start out driving in my A4. A reality check can be nice, but don't come at a self proclaimed "n00b" and squash his stepping stones. So try to ignore the attitudes and take in the advice, at least a little bit.

I, personally, on a complete hobbyist level, love recording in my bedroom with limited gear. SM57/58, sennheiser e609, studio projects B-1, through a DMP3 into a macbook. For me, again just how I roll, I don't have a full band so I have to track out all the necessary parts myself. I use my recordings for songwriting purposes mostly, and hey, I've been getting better and better recordings almost every time. You try, you fail, you try some more damnit! :D

Which inevitably leads to my next point:

I thought that since Im being mentioned here as an elitist...Id try to help the OP...Dont buy a mic...rent an hour or two in a local studio where you will have access to a nice room and some nice mics and preamps...that usually costs arround 40 bucks an hour and if you know the vocals well you might just whip it out quickly...so practice.

If you want your recordings to have "playlist quality" this is most likely your easiest option. Keep in mind though, some studios might be run by cats that might not have the ear for your recordings.

I typed too much. Plain and simple, keep on keepin' on.
This stuff can be frustrating, but can also be one of the best feelings.:D

Man people are over opinionated about sound equipment especially mics... If you buy a nice tube preamp (tube MP) it will definitely make any mic you put through it sound better.... There is no rule how can you people say "dynamics will sound better than a cheap condenser"??? That is over opinionated bul*s*it!
You don't know what you are talking about...

And yet you make a sweeping statement about a tube MP making any mic sound "better?"

Many people will rightly argue that a Shure SM-7b is generally going to sound better than any $350 condenser mic. Michael Jackson thought so when he selected a mic for Off the Wall and Thriller.

While nearly every "go to" vocal microphone is a dynamic (with a few exceptions, of course depending on the source), would you care to elaborate on that a bit...?

I'm not sure I follow. I use dynamic mics for live performances but I almost always record with a condensor... be it a Blue BabyBottle or an AT2020... There is a huge difference in quality , but I would prefer a condensor to a dynamic for recording purposes almost always. What "go to" dynamic mics are you talking about? On rare occasions I might record my vocals with an SH55 but that's rare, (like vocals with heavy effects).

Oh, and I'm not saying you're wrong or anything, I have just yet to find a good dynamic that picks up as much character as a condensor. If I could find one, I would happily sell my expensive condensors and go dynamic. It may just be a difference in sound preference.
