Noise on split Anderson Pick up

I have had an Anderson H2+ recently installed in my guitar (swamp ash, hard tail, maple neck). I absolutely love the sound, and it has transformed my guitar. I particularly like the split sound. However, it is very noisy. Totally clean it isn't a big problem, but introducing distortion or overdrive creates very loud hum. Is this normal? It just seems excessive.

The other thing I notice is that there seems to be some element of potentially a grounding issue. When I touch the strings, or metal hardware some of the noise dissipates, but the hum/noise is still there fairly prominently. This grounding thing is also driving me nuts.

I had the pickup installed by a professional, and he reconnected the ground to the bridge, but still, when I don't touch a piece of metal there is noise.

Any thoughts?

Cold solder joint on the grounding wire, on the pickup connections themselves, soldering heat damaged a pot, the shielding under the pickguard didn't get reconnected, or maybe a wire broke off as the expert was re-assembling and didn't see it. Not sure what the split coil pickup is but if you replaced a humbucker with a single coil, you will have noise, especially noticeable with high gain settings. Take it back if you paid someone to do this.
