Hello all:

I recently added a Delta 44 to my system (1.6 ghz, 521 ram, GT3, tracktion for the hell of it, Sonar 4 on the way). Anywho, when record gtr using the 44's input (1/4 TS cable halfway in so as not to be TRS) I get good level using -10 sensitivity (tried consumer and +4 but guuitar output not hot enough) but the "monitored input" has a background "static" similar to digital distortion. Get this, the actual recorded signal does not have the stuff "grainy mess" I hear when I input monitor. The recorded signal is clear as a bell. I am puzzled. I have the mixer monitor control selected on the Delta's applet and input monitor selected in GT3. When I used TS conncector (tip sleeve) fully inserted I got more grainy stuff ( basically higher level), use ts and it is less. What to do? Thanks again.

I sometimes get some noise while direct monitoring from my Delta 44.
Only on one channel though. And like you said, only on monitoring...
And... I'm pretty sure that it's only when I plug the guitar direct...
Hmmm.

if your plugging a guitar directly into a 44 - you shouldnt.
your getting an impedence mismatch. and potential for incorrect levels and noise.
you MUST go through a buffer - like a direct box for example.

Delta 44 noise

Thanks folks. Impedance mismatch sounds right (no pun intended). I will try a direct box. I have an active Countryman but right now no phantom power supply. Any recommedations on a passive unit? Do they exist? Or maybe a cheap phantom power supply with mic pre included. That way I can use my condenser mics. I suppose I should just cough up for a small mixer sooner than I had planned. I suppose I could conjure up a matching transformer rig of a sort. What is the input impedance of the Delta 44? Do not see it in manual. Also I forgot to mention that I have active pickups (EMG SA). I do know that I have had issues with some effects pedals. Once again thanks for the help. This forum rocks.

thurgood. heres the proper signal chain.
mic(micing guitar amp)>>>mixer mic in>>>>44 line input
OR
guitar>>>>direct box>>>>mixer>>>44 line input
OR
guitar>>>a guitar processor (eg...digitech rp 50, behr vamp etc)>>>>44 line input
just search on the net for guitar direct box. behr and many other companies sell them. a usefull cheap mixer is a yamaha mg.

If you are monitoring during recording, why not just plug the monitors straight into the mixer?
I encountered clipping when direct monitoring, but that was not due to my delta 44. It was due to the driver I had selected as my default drivers ('cause I have an integrated soundcard - kinda hard to remove it ;) ), which could not handle the latency selection.
Anyway, all my problems were solved when I selected the Delta 44 drivers. My only problem, is I gotta keep switching between my regular soundcard and the Delta 44. If I am tracking, I gotta select the Delta 44 Driver, if I am monitoring for mixing or playback, then I gotta go and change it so it will go through my integrated soundcard.
This is why I'm looking into some small monitors that I can just plug into my 3/4 Outs from my Delta 44.
Anyway, I hope this helped, if not sorry to waste your time. :)

P.S. I do this 'cause I go through a switchbox which allows me to select from two different computer and still hear the sound

Not that this post has anything to with this thread.
But, I just solved my own problem. Why, 'cause I read it, and realize that I can run a Y cable from my 3/4 1/4" mono outs to a 1/8" stereo into my switchbox for my computer 1 side.

Hell pretty soon, I'll have threads where I'll just post the answer to my own question. Oh! wait, I think I've already done that! :o

Noisy Delta 44

Hey all!

Thanks again. I gave a bit more thought to the "noisy problem". One comment I received addressed the possibility of an impedance mismatch. Granted I probably do have a gross mismatch in that I was attempting do input guitar directly to the delta 1/4 inch input. However, in the interest of further inquiry, if this noise was in fact due solely to an impedance mismatch the recorded signal would be distorted. This is not the case; the recorded signal is clean. The "junk/artifact" is only heard when monitoring input as the track is recorded. Puzzling I admit. One more thing, what is the actual signal flow of a soundcard? My apparantly outdated analog oriented brain is overburdened with conventional notions which are no longer conventional. As I remember input flow it went something like this. (I hope this is the appropriate forum for this addendum) Mic/line-Pad-Pre-Insert send/return pre-Eq.-EQ-Insert send return post-EQ-Aux Send pre or post fader- Channel fader-Buss Matrix-Storage. With a soundcard I am lost. Granted some aspects are controlled by my choice of software DAW, in this case GT3. But to be honest I am having dificulty finding the proverbial hole in the ground. Once again thanks to all, your help is most welcome.

More noise

Oops I forgot: Sorry to re-post, but my boss ventured in.
Dracon, I am using outs 3/4 ganged to a 1/8 mini to my junky computer speakers. Thanks. Could my sneaky PC be trying to input monitor from my onboard SB card even though I have selected Delta 44? One more thing I noticed in hte Delta applet is the "disable ASIO drivers" selection in Router/Patchbay. What the heck?

Connect your outs 1 & 2 to you monitors...or a little mixer or a headphone amp!!!

Choose the MONITOR MIXER seting in the Delta Control Pannel...this will Monitor directly the signal comming in on all outs and not the signal comming from your software DAW...you can adjust the levels of this Monitor Mix using the Delta Mixer. This enables Direct Zero Latency monitoring!!!
