not sure if i am using correct terminology... but what is a decent noise floor (meaning the amount of background noise (in db)) when recording in a home studio?

i am at around -57 with no noises in the house... how am i doing?

how are you determining the noise floor?

are you talking about the noise level before you start cranking up the gain, or are you talking about the noise level you get once you raise the gain such that your recordings have an average of -6db?

here's an old thread on the topic that I started some time ago.

see how you compare.

btw, i only have one room for my studio, but i keep my PC in an adjacent closet, so the noise stays low.

I tried this out last night with the drum kit all mic'd up. I checked the kick and snare mics. The kick mic(an audix F12 I believe) was at -79db and the snare mic(sm57) was -73db. This was done with the pre's at tracking level. I think this is pretty good. It does however get a little worse when a big truck drives by the house. But even then they both were around -65db
