No love for the ACM 3?

I think they're gonna be sending us motors, subassemblies with the ribbon installed.

As I stated quite a while back "They will be sending replacment ribbons for past GB mics, and extra ribbons with the present GB mics". It was never stated that they will be sending motor assemblies. I do remember suggesting that, but they only agreed to replacment ribbons.

That's a drag, man. So I'll get two more opportunities to ruin the thing.

I have hardly seen anyone put these up as a suggestion when talking about ribbons.

The design is generally cited as the problem but the arguably best, most heralded ribbon mics ever has almost the exact design. So is it the execution of this particular mic that is it's downfall or are the other ribbons in this GB just that much better?

Indeed, the ACM3 is a copy of one of the best microphone designes, and its origin goes back to B&O BM3/4. Three main features of the design--1) use of the body itself as a part of magnetic return circuit, 2) use of magnets with no pole pieces, and 3) use of the grill for frequency response shaping, were quite revolutionary for the time. Consequent refinment, esp. use of modern Neodymium magnets pushed the design to a new level, with high output and nice, open sound with quite extended highs.

So indeed, the execution is a limiting factor, but definitely, the mic has a great potential.
The original transformer... well it is "designed" against every possible rule and physics law, resulting in high noise level and sucky sound. Actually, the Edcor mentioned here although has better lamination, but still is not much better than that.
The Lundahl is the only currently commercially available transformer I could recommend. Hold on a second... from inside sources I know that a new premium ribbon transformer is on the way to the market ;).

Here is a couple tracks recorded simultaneously. The first is a highly modified ACM3 and second is original Stellar RM3 (the same, rebranded mic) . Pay attention to the noise difference:

If you're curious, here's a listen that compares the ACM3 to a SM57. Note that the amp was "dialed in" for the 57. If it were just a ribbon, I'd have used slightly different settings. In any case, if you're familiar with the 57, this at least let's you hear the difference--the ribbon is darker and smoother.

There's more where that came from (different guitars & styles, etc.) so let me know if you want the link.

When you say "heavily modded," what exactly did you do?

Re-machine the motor
Use new magnets
Put a new 1.5um ribbon
Use my own toroid transformer
Use phantom powered circuit

I ordered 2 ACM3 to use on guitar cabs. I was wondering what other uses I could get out of these things?

Anybody ever used them as drum overheads?

What about for micing a guitar cab live? These will be my first ribbon mics and I have heard they can be very delicate. To delicate/sensitive to be gigging with?

If I did want to mod them where would I track down a new transformer? I think that's the only mod I am brave enough to try.

live might be rough because of the back of the figure 8 pattern picking up all sorts of other stuff.

i've used my acm 3 on trumpet, trombone and violin with BEAUTIFUL results.

i tried the acm 2 for drum overheads and it didn't really strike my fancy. too dark, at least for the kit i was recording.

I had sagging and stretched out ribbons in both of mine... so they are pretty much on the junk heap until replacement ribbons arrive.

That's like converting a warehouse into apartments, man. All you've got left is the original shell, right?

:D:D:D

I'd say converting a loft into a nice appartment... somewhere on 57th and 5th AVE...:)
