Next Step - Mastering

hi all, i've got about 4 songs recorded on my tascam 2488 mk2, have just a couple of remixes to do before i 'think' i'm ready to dump the .wavs off to my(wife's) laptop where I have audacity installed. not sure what all I can do with audacity yet but it at least looks like i can do compression and limiting which seems to be the most of what they need at this point.

not so stingy that i can't pony up for a purchased product once i have a better idea of what i need.

any suggestions?

ready to get these put away so i can start on a few more.

I would suggest at least trying to get into a program like Reaper. REAPER | Download
It's a free un-crippled demo and I think it cost $60 to purchase.
Just start with an EQ and a Limiter. Audacity seems like would be a little narley to get around. Good luck.

another vote for reaper, the workflow is really nice. it even supports direct DDP export.
 
going thru the reaper user guide. i realize i have no idea where to start after i create a new project and suck in a .wav file.

is there an order that i should follow as far as what to start with--compression, limiting, normalization,...

i've been referencing this video mainly because he's explaining what he's doing albeit he's using a different app.. but hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction. any good links would be appreciated.

i could use a good explanation about compression and what the params mean/do... release, attack, etc...

given that question, its maybe not the best idea to master your songs yourself - this is not mastering. you are even far away from knowing how to mix, so your "next step" should be to learn how to record, mix etc.
maybe as a fast solution you could take a good limiter & put it on your tracks until you have -12dB RMS. thats ok for demoing them e.g. in the web.
 
not trying to win a grammy, just looking to toss a few overly ripe bananas up on the interwebs.

i've got everything(for now) recorded and mixed about as well as i can mix it on the unit.

still would like a recommendation to a site or sites where all this stuff is explained.
