Anyone have any insight on the portable digital recorders, such as the zoom? Are they worth the money, or should I spend another $100 and get the fostex mr-8. I had the boss br-8 and sold it.

I preface this by saying I have no personal experience of any of the machines you're talking about, but...

If the Boss (aka Roland) machine isn't doing it for you, I don't know that you'd consider the Zoom as an upgrade. Roland and Fostex have been in the portable recorder business for a long time and I'd tend to trust them rather than Zoom - only Zoom thing I ever owned was a multi-effect which was so noisy as to be unusable - it was thrown in with a guitar purchase and I later gave it away - things may have improved, however.

Why are you going from 8 channel to 8 channel? Perhaps one of the upper model Rolands / Yamahas / Fostex is more where you should be headed, depending upon what you want it for and financing, of course.

Then there's the PC-DAW route as well, which others will comment on - I've always liked and used standalone devices so I won't go down that path with you.

Cheers

Yo Lama:

Yamaha has three SIAB models out there now. The AW16 is a nice box at a reasonable price with good sound.

I use the 2816 -- a bit more to learn but works in a similar fashion. Or the 4416.

You will get good sound from any of the above; but, you will have to buy a reserve power unit to protect your unit from damage in case you lose power while recording. I have one and it was not that expensive.

Burning the CD's with any unit above is not difficult. Getting the levels to the optimum place takes some time. I believe you get 16 tracks with any of the above and can record 8 tracks at once.

Look them over. It's a buyer's market.

Green Hornet :D :D :p

I sold the br-8 when I was under the influence of the dumb ass. I was wanting to stay away from the pc recording and use a stand alone. Just confused which way to go. I definitly thank you for your input. I will be checking ebay for the mr-8 or the fostex with the hard drive (VF-80)?
