I'm a late in life singer (started at 40 and am 47 now) that is about to get into home recording. My final goal is to sing wedding ceremonies and to put together a "show" to perform at local retirement homes as a way to give back to those folks who seem to be forgotten and yet shaped us all.
Anyway...
I was recently asked to make a CD
of gospel and inspirational songs for a friend of a friend who turned 101 in September! This lead to a spirited effort on my part to pull it together all for free.
I found a guy locally with a Roland VS2000 and other gear he could transport to my church to do the recordings. Up until this time my ONLY recording had been done on a portable karaoke machine with a built in cassette deck. I absolutely hated my voice and always thought I was flat and/or sharp and yet here I was being asked to make a CD so I must not be that bad, right? Well, when the guy played back the recordings I was stunned. I still don't care for my own voice but I was on pitch and actually had a fuller and richer voice than I'd thought. I was a bit relieved.
Soooooo....I bought a Roland VS2400CD at an awesome price and I'm going to build a home studio around that. I looked at smaller units but wanted to run a monitor off it (at that age where larger type with greater contrast is required LOL). I'm also PC literate so using a mouse and monitor fits my habits better and I also think that I'll learn how to take full advantage of the Roland if there's more to see on screen at one time. Finally, I am an engineer so seeing the bigger picture will help.
For a room I have a son who is graduating college and will be moving out (he has a J-O-B thank the Almighty) so I'm going to convert his room. It's 12 x 12 so for my purposes it will work well I think. It will be a multipurpose room though with home office mixed in.
Here's the question...what next? I know I need some mics (voice and guitar/piano), booms, cables, etc. I'm going to search this forum but if anyone has suggestions those are also appreciated.
Thanks and I Look forward to learning all I can here!
