Newbie to music. Have I the big talent?

Well, I didn't say this recording reflected commercial-value talent,...

but for home recording just for fun it's passable.;)

It's obviously a rough sounding recording, but if you'll hang in there, your recordings will improve.

You newer guys won't remember, but there's an old post from over a year ago, called WEBCYAN's "mytcbycupjustfell", and this is the yardstick I measure all suckiness by. You don't suck, as compared to something that truly sucks, like "mytcbycupjustfell". Trust me, you don't.;)

Some Advice

Show off something a little more mainstream. I have nothing to compare it to.

I'm not sure what message this "song" was trying to convey.

How bout this?

OK, thanks for your comments. Some of you were very helpful and kind and I apreciate that. Some of you were rude and sarcy which is a bit naughty really as I'm a newbie and I'm only 21.

I think maybe my vocals could have been better so I have booked 5 lessons with this woman who advertises in the local music shop. I am taking my music making very seriously as you can see as I am determined to be a success. I am also taking up guitar lessons and might do a guitar tune next.

The other thing I did was buy a sample CD! So I have sorted the vocal problem out very easily!!

Anyway, I was inspired and spent all yesterday and last night recording and 'honing' my skills. I took all your comments on board and made this new tune 'The Great Wall' which was inspired by a documentary on Tokyo which was on BBC2 recently. I think it is an improvement over 'Give it Back' but you'll have to decide for yourselves! Listening to it, I'm very pleased with the result and think it's quite catchy but probably could have done with more flanger. Also, I did all the drum programming myself! I think I would describe it as easy listening and it would make good tv music.

Listen here:

As always, helpful comments are greatly welcomed! Thanks.

Enjoy!

That's cool man, but the Great Wall is in China, not Japan!

;)

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAA
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
!!!RLMFAO!!!
Oh my God... THIS IS SO FUNNY...

excuse me..
actually.. this sucks even more.
I remember an old computergame called Keen, it has exactly the same sounds on the background.. maybe you should try that..

Take me seriously.. but don't take yourself...

Big fuckin' yikes..........

Either this guy's funnin' the lot of you, or he's the biggest wanker this side of Jarl Sigurd....

Either way - troll or serious - pink noise is more musical than that tripe...

I decided since maybe I was a little harsh I'd give a listen to your new "project"

Wow. You have just proved once again that you have no idea what you are doing. And I'm sorry the fact that you're 21 makes me laugh at you even more, if you were 12, maybe I'd feel bad for taking you down a peg or two, but honestly guy, I've heard 8 year olds be more musical when they fart.

By the way I'm 20, listen to my band's new song, maybe it will inspire you, but if it ends up it any of you crazy sounds clips, I'm suing your ass.

by the way for anyone else who hears it, the is not the final mix, the vocals go too quiet during the 2nd chorus and the bridge, any other suggestions I'd appreciate, thanks.

I think your second attempt is an improvement of the first. I'm not too crazy about the synth sounds though, again they lack any midrange frequency, making them sound like an accordian. Try to get more character out of your sounds by bringing in more midrange.

The vocal sample is slightly out of time. You may want to look at how you are synchronizing it with the rest of the tune.

If you are thinking of going into soundtrack type work, I seriously suggest you spend time listening to background music on TV shows. If you have "The Naked Chef" in your neck of the woods, watch the show but listen to the music during the segues. Excellent stuff for the genre. Rent some movies too. There is some fantastic movie music out there in electronica/sampling form (my current favorite is the music to "Run Lola Run").

He spent one whole night "honing" his skills!! No wonder I can't get this right! I've spent years trying to "hone" mine, but never one whole night, non-stop, without a break. That has to be the secret!!

thanks

Thanks Cyrokk. You seem to be the only decent human being in here. The rest just love taking the piss - it makes them feel better about themselves I think.

I will do another tune and show you all!! I might even surprise you !! hehehe

bukky...

Buckshot...

I listened to your track.

Do you live in the uk? Are you near London?

The reason I ask is because next week I go for my singing lesson. You could come to if you're not doing anything.

You sound like you are....how can I say this nicely.....

constipated?

Maybe 30 minutes with Mrs.Smedley might sort you out.

Let me know.

Cheers, Paul.

bukky...

....you're obviously trying for a numer one. Sounds more like you're forcing a number 2!

:)

"hey hey hey..........hey"

i think you have a future man....

you could write for this show that my 2 year old neice watches called....

the tellie tubbies.......

I KNOW you're in here pulling our legs, based on your last comment....

keep it up though...you are imaginative..:D

I like...

Actually I'm a big fan of the teletubbies. My favorite is Lady Penelope!

Wish I had a pink Rolls!

:)

p.s. New track on its way. Going for a more experimental and minimalistic approach.

My number two is still better than anything you've ever done, lots of luck smart ass. It took you two threads to come up with a fart joke? So your intelligence is a lot like your attempts at music...(I refuse to call that music) A complete, and utter mess.

Regardless of my singing, you couldn't say too much musically could ya? While you're at Mrs. Smedley, maybe ask for some basic music lessons too.

By "minimalist", I hope you mean "muted" - and by "experimental", I hope you mean "without the use of any vocals or other sound sources"..........

Trust me - it'll sound better...........

By the way, to answer your question at the very top of the thread - "Newbie to music. Have I the big talent".... that would be a resounding NO!!!

Um... I think he's been taking us all for a bit of a ride mate! A carefully constructed joke which looks like it took a bit too much effort...I kinda hope he is being serious for the amount of thought he seems to have put into it!

About the song, it's pretty good I like it, bass seems a bit buried? It seems to be a strong bass line, but you can't quite make it out, not defined enough if you know what I mean. Vocals are good, sound a bit forced on the higher notes though...obviously hard to avoid this when you're pushing your range! Maybe you could bring in another element to the song in the second verse to make it different from the first? The bridge is a nice little break, but I'm not too sure what's going on there? And then after that, there seems to be a guitar solo which is barely audible? Sounds good too! Ummm.... I don't really like the la-da-da bit that much at all. You probably know most of this since it isn't the final mix, but thats IMHO for you.
