Hi guys,

I know it's not much good without a clip (i'll upload one on my lunch break in a couple of hours) I have lots of recording experience on the playing end, but as an engineer, im just starting to break into it. I'm having problem with a specific area in the guitars, low end is fine, but finding single notes aren't sounding as good as they could - a bit thin, etc. But I can't seem to nail the problem area.

(these are just guide guitars for now, retracking is not a problem, I just want to do it with a tone im happy with first, before tracking them finally, and trying to fix the problem then.

That being said, it's a new guitar that I'm not 100% familiar with, new Ibanez custom - Purpleheart body, w/ DiMarzio Crunch Lab in bridge position, so it may just be a matter of another few days of working out the sweet spots.

If anyone has some ideas for where I should start once you've heard the clip, let me know :D

Andy

Record multiple tracks and combine them in the mix ..... you'll love it!

Oh and welcome to the forum Andy! New guy purchases the Beer. ;) ~ :drunk:

Yeah, ive tried double tracking - one L, one R, and also quad - two each side (yes my playing is tight enough that im not making it sound worse) haha and yes everything fills out, the bottom end is sitting well, just a frequency thats not quite right, it could be a case of not enough/too much gain.

Could come down to microphone placement or possibly not the right microphone for the job.

What side of the road do you drive on? ..... never mind it's doesn't matter much after a few pints anywho.

Yes - very likely im using an Ownhammer SM57 / Mesa Impulse response, but im not too familiar with shaping tones with the IR's. Could be the source of all my troubles :)

Possibly. Others will chime in as well with there thoughts on the matter.

Also should say I'm recording with the Fractal Axe-Fx Ultra, been using it live and now starting to record with it - previously used ENGL Powerball / Powerball II models, so the combination of new guitar, working out IR's and dabbling in recording all at once is a bit overwhelming, but lots of fun. I can get a drum sound I'm reasonably happy with for now, how much does your live tone differ from your recording tone? Gain aside.

First - get a sound/tone you like out of your amp.
Second - turn the gain/distortion down a bit.
Third - experiment with mic placement - towards the outer edge of speaker cone, towards the center, etc.

Again depends on the microphone and the room.

I'm liking a ribbon microphone on guitar cabs now!

This helps a lot when recording for a little goes a long way.
