Jim lad gets my vote to head up the HR diplomatic corps........Hey Mol Kres:
I'll answer your question before I sign off here. Don't be too disheartened. If you're guilty of anything, it's just "Poor Timing". Your question is asked and answered several times a week and that fact has been up for discussion in recent days. All of the folks here have patiently answered this question over and over and will probably go back to taking turns at it in short order.
Now to answer your question and in no way to put you off, (we actually want you to join us) take the time to read through this thread. http://www.tweakheadz.com/guide.htm
It's an excellent introduction to Home Recording.
Come on back in when you're done and let us know what kind of gear you are interested in.
We'll all be glad to give you some pointers.![]()
Guys if you dont wanna answer the question then why post anything at all or even open the thread?
jesus, he just wants some help.
While your answer was a damn good one, in a sense it highlights the particular problem that the OP's question raises. You assume they're going digital but the OP was so vague in their question that it's unsafe to assume anything. And that's partly why some of the replies that came forth did so. It was as informative a question as asking "I want to fall in love. How do I do this ?".if you're going digital, as i would assume...
Steady on old chap !its allright these so called old users are very brutal to newbiesits like getting virtually raped in this forum....
i am pretty sure these hardass pro's here will show you right directions and whats best for your money.![]()
No-one here is a hardass - most are genuinely helpful, but get a little irked by people who ask extremely vague questions as first post then, when asked for further information, never reappear.
So the standard response for people like mol-kres, who is undoubtedly long gone, is to read the information that's been provided time and time again, then come back and ask a more focused question that we can reasonably help them with.
As well, we spend a significant amount of time countering the advice given by other newbies who actually know little more than the people they're trying to help and often steer them in unwise directions.
There's also a sense of camaraderie around the joint and regular newbie helpers will joke with each other, sometimes at the newb's expense - big deal - it's not a paid service, you know... we're not breaching SLAs or quality standards...
Most newbies fit in quite well if they approach it in the right manner and are very welcome - some are beyond help or scare too easily..
All he asked was what should he do to build a home studio ,
there are people in this forums who reply such stupid threads for us newbies sake , like Bisson820 did which was all he needed , then could have looked for thread which are about cheapest or good quality equipments and stuff.
There are around 100,000 threads on that subject in this forum alone. You might want to browse through a few of them.
thanks for the answer, i will search for that
Anyway like they said there are 1000's of threads on this topic but the best thing to do would be to think for a minute ( how much can i pay , what kind of room am i setting it up for , what kind of gig is this )
Because there are thousands of equipments for setting up and it all depends on what kind of setup you are looking for and whats the budget.
After you get a clear picture of what kind of money you are going to spent on this......

Yeah, don't worry too much about us mol...
All good fun.
Yea Yea , you are the good guy and newbies are pure evils who emerged from devils souls and with your grace we may be pure in future.
All he asked was what should he do to build a home studio , i dont see the need for you to show a link to some Pro studio material and tell him people start usually with this kind of stuff. Or bunch of other rude stuff that you guys started with. If it bothers so much , then go to other sections , leave newbie sections for newbie , there are people in this forums who reply such stupid threads for us newbies sake , like Bisson820 did which was all he needed , then could have looked for thread which are about cheapest or good quality equipments and stuff.
Remember what the forums says, "Just starting? Afraid to ask a stupid question? Don't worry, in here nobody will laugh at you. But if it's on a topic covered in another forum, best to post it there"
So why do you expect intellectual stuff from the newbies ? He seriously didnt know where to start from , he doesn't even know whats the basics of a studio. I was at same phase once, i looked around once and guess what ? all the threads there was were mentioning these instruments and equipments and stuff but i didnt know where to start. I made a post in a forums and they answered that i need a PC , Audio interface, a decent monitors or headphones , a Mic and some software. And then if he posts what i need for studio then it would be pretty stupid. But if he doesn't know , that means he doesn't know.
You and couple of your buddies are quite the bullies in this newbie section , you did the same thing to my thread ,made me feel like a retard . You do same in other threads and you did same in this one. You may feel like you are just making a joke , but when we come to these forums looking for help . That kind of makes you not do it , somewhat discouraging.
If the mods and admins have problems with newbie posting such stuff, i am pretty sure they will clean it up , making fun of him or saying go look for threads didnt help him , how do i know ? i was at the same place and it obviously didnt help.
Okay:Example-- I'm pretty sure I saw somebody asking around on one of these forums if he could record his vocals in midi.
That question is so wrong that no one should have to answer it.
But, but, Jim, you're a diplomat !Okay:
So ... guns in their holsters boys.
Point [a] I'm totally with you on, the first bit. The second bit I think you'll find is a mixed bag. In the sticky Tim thread, the main reason I advocated that idea was that whenever you hit the newbie page, the stickys are there before anything else that comes up so you don't need to know it's a sticky or what a sticky is. It will be the first thing you see. Whether one reads it them or not is something we can only guess at. My guess is that some will, some won't.Okay:
a) The newbie comes in knowing nothing and for that reason alone, does not know what to ask or where to look or even what information to look for when he/she gets there. So what is the point of a "Sticky Thread" for someone who doesn't even know what a "Sticky Thread" is?
b) Given that there are several midi controllers on the market with XLRs & preamps that serve as Audio Interfaces, that was a perfectly reasonable question. Shows that the individual has tried looking for the information but couldn't come up with it.
As you can see, Guitaristic, I'm only using your post as an example so please don't kill me.![]()
Hey welcome and its allright these so called old users are very brutal to newbiesits like getting virtually raped in this forum
What they dont seem to get is this is newbie section and we are newbie , yes we can read the threads but we always dont find what we want, the other guys making the post might have a $500 budget and i might have a $2k budget , so the equipments recommended in that thread may not be the best for my buck.
Anyway like they said there are 1000's of threads on this topic but the best thing to do would be to think for a minute ( how much can i pay , what kind of room am i setting it up for , what kind of gig is this )

anyways..
I'd first like to ask with how much are you willing to spend and what kind of stuff oyu wanna record because every instrument needs different things (more or less)
if youre going digital, as i would assume... you will need an interface, most of which come with recording software you need.
you will need these no matter what.
Computer
Interface
Software
Microphone(s)
Instrument
The signal path is this... Instrument > Microphone > Interface > Computer > Software
Lets say your singing!... that means you sing into the microphone, which is connected to one of the XLR ports on your interface... your interface is connected to your computer via USB or Firewire and on your computer is the recording software.
Electric guitar? either mic your amp and follow the same process or perhaps you want to go directly into the interface? well if you're doing that... then you will need some kind of amplification... for that you can get a DI box pretty cheaply. that path would be this... Guitar > effects pedals (if any) from there plug into your DI box or whatever form of preamplification you will have. from there plug into your interface and then so on.
same applies to bass.
Drums? harder....
for drums you will need at least 2 mics.. (i use 7 or 8).... its nice to be able to mic each piece of the kit... but if your budget doesnt allow it.. you can get away with 2 if you practice placement... it wont nearly have the same professional sound but like i said..y ou can get by that way... with 2 mics i would mic the kick with a dynamic mic and then an overhead condenser mic. if you can muster 3 mics then micing the snare is nice, with which i would use the shure sm57.
any questions? i know there can be plenty..
I still remember my first thread on the subject.
It was in mudcat.org.
I asked "How do I get my voice from the microphone, into the computer".
Something like that and it's not all that long ago.
You can turn it down or you can turn it up but you can't do both. So, anyone know how to make my mixes sound better, louder too
You can turn it down or you can turn it up but you can't do both.
So which would you like, louder or better?![]()

EDIT
Hey! I found it.
