Newbie In Home Recording Need Help

Hi Guys,

I am new to home recording and would like to start doing some of my own recordings. I have downloaded a free software called audacity and would like to try out simple recoding stuff like recording my ownself playing. However, My computer knowledge is quite limited and i have no idea how to connect my guitar to the computer. Can anyone enlighten me on how to connect my electric guitar to the computer? (I.e what type cables i need? Where do i plug in my cables? (to soundcards etc...) do i need extra hardware? Thx For Any help provided.

Keeping it simple, you are going to need at least a pre amp and a cable to connect to your soundcard (probably 1/8" TRS). There are quite a few things that you can get, depending on what you want to do: e.g., record acoustic guitar and vocals, record a whole band, etc. Tell me what you want to do, in some detail, and we can go from there.

hi,

I want to start on something really simple like playing over a drum loop, adding my own rhythms and then jamming along my recorded stuff. I would like to record my own singing over my own recorded stuff too. Any help from u guys for a newbie?

Well... for really basic stuff I just jacked the output of my effects box to the line-in on the soundcard and used the computer mic to record voice. The levels for those can be adjusted in software mixer. More recently I spent $50 on a behringer mixer and got a cheap mic (mixer has mic preamps). I still don't have a guitar amp but I'm at least able to record. I used software (Fruity Loops, etc.) for rhythm patterns until I bought a drum kit. Now that I have the drum kit I wish I had more mic inputs on that mixer because they need to be mic'ed really bad.
