New Track: She Must Go (working title / early preview) feedback appreciated!

Soooooo, this is what I've started working on and my first track for probably 1-2yrs, just a couple of hours work so far so still lots to do (hard to fit in my music around work/kids but I'm trying as I really want to try and make something out of it!), but wanted to share this early preview with you.

Produced with Studio One and Reason (via Rewire) for the drums / guitar (not lead)

Thanks to everyone for their advice/file sharing tips! :)

Enjoy!

i guess everyone's in shock.... that could be good OR bad lol! :D

whore yourself a bit mate...its a quite time of year in here and helping others with their tracks, as you obviously have skill, you are more likely to get more returns per views

on the track so far

I didnt expect this..at first I thought it was too far in the distance, verb/delay, but it works better when the drier percussion comes in...but its quite cheesy and poppy which I like..Ive been sketching a really daft sounding tune, Jarre meets Chas n Dave, recently, so I like it...its where do you take it from here to flesh it out...vocals, huge lead synth, jingly jangly guitar, novelty samples?

I bet its a hard one to finish off...

works so far though

Just so you know, this forum leans pretty far towards real instruments and away from midi, (not right or wrong, just the way it is here) so theres not much to comment on, since theres no vocals or arrangement yet. If you turn it into a song you will get comments. So far sounds OK.

So far it seems ok but I was waiting for it to go somewhere but it didn't, seems to be the same phrase over and over.
I think you need to put a time change in there, somewhere in the middle to slow it down or something like that, some sort of an Instrumental break.
Just my 2 cents

thanks for the feedback so far, it's really good.

reference the track "not going anywhere" yet, this is purely because I worked mostly on the first chorus/verse, then broke it down for the intro (adding other elements as I did it) so the whole build up itself is really just there to get to that first guitar part (which was then looped for another 8 bars just so you could listen a little longer before it just cut out :) but it's by no means going to stay like that).

re the real instrument vs midi/synths - this is also something that I am going to aim for, i am a lover of "real" music as well as electronic and want to focus on producing tracks that sound like they've been played by real instruments (not the easiest thing when you're not using real ones or have very limited experience of playing them :))

so theres a lot to do, in terms of bringing a more human element into the track and where i take the track next (vocals are something i've really wanted to get into a track for a long time now, so this will be the opportunity to do so :))

i'm happy with the piano intro part so far, it's quite heavy on the reverb (will maybe turn a notch or two down) but this is the sound i wanted to go for (similar to something someone like coldplay may produce) but once the drier beats etc kick in it all balances out nicely. That bassline will also be substituted for a real bass instead of the electro synth one thats currently there, so hopefully this well also help with the more "realistic" sound that I'm going for.

i've gotta sort out the lead guitar on the main verse also, for the most part it sounds ok (the couple of bits where it exagerates a bit too much need fixing and i may even go so far as to kindly ask someone to play it and sample it instead - unless i can find a decent guitar vst, couldn't get the sound i wanted from Slayer but that may be inexperience on my part).

yeah no offence, but it's "ok" the melody is pretty weak and cheesy, nice rich wide sound though i'll give it that, once i rework venus rising that will be awesome and the break/build on it blows this away :P

but this track isn't going to be a dance/trance track so the mechanics will be different (but it will still obviously reach its peaks, just in different ways :))

I'm not sure you understand Dream, the point is to be compelling, which is not so easy as you might imagine...

I am not into sequencing, and I recon you are kicking shit up a hill if that is the way you want to become compelling... but I wanted to listen to kcearl's thing more than once... = compelling... to me. Your thing is perfectly good, but doesn’t have that quality... again... to me.

You said yourself you are at a begining, so be nice...

i am, i stated this is 2hrs work as opposed to however many to put into a full track - big difference - and im not saying its a bad track, but to `me` it doesn't have a great build up or an example of "how to make your track move" when compared to a lot of dance tracks - didn't say i didn't like it - everyones opinion will differ, but this is a thread for critique of someone elses track so we're going off topic.

Yes, stick to mp3 clinic tradition, and why don't you perhaps make a comment on his thread?

Well, first off, don't let the Real vs Synth argument sway you in anyway. HR is not about real instruments, it's about recording at home. However you do it and whatever you produce is all good.

Don't be discouraged if people don't respond right away. It might take a day or two. If it falls to the second page without a remark, it would be okay to bump. But definitely need a little patience, especially this time of year. People just aren't on site as much.

I understand this is a work in progress. What you have so far is okay. I think with everything going on you will have a hard time fitting in a lead melody, like vocals or a solo instrument.

cheers,

lol @ Dreamy.....dont be a hater

Kcearl, I'm not and sorry if it came across that way, it's just not my cup of tea that's all, I said I do respect the quality of the track overall and if you'd like I will "review" it properly soon :) You especially have given me a lot of time/tips/feedback since I registered here, so I thank you especially.

Think was just a bad day for me! sorry all.

Track updated (i've done more that this, but an idea of the direction, vocals next!)

Nice poppy hook, but it's really cheesy. It sounds like I've already heard it 7 million times. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Familiarity is comfort. It's just very Casio-like. Like if I hit the "demo" button on a keyboard at Wal-Mart, this is what I will hear. Work on making it sound human somehow.

Fair comment, and that's the part i'm trying to push away from sounding synthy/artificial to more "real" (quite hard without real instruments) the track as a whole is meant to be an upbeat/poppy/feel good kinda track so at least that is working :)

I'll keep developing the sounds as I work, the synthy bassline that comes in is there more as a temporary thing to keep it moving along but will be changed and I think that will make a big difference to start with.

Can anyone recommend some good guitar vsti's? I have Slayer2 but wondered if there was anything better or if this is as real as it gets?

the problem lies with folks telling you to use my track as a reference, its not me, I think they just like the mix...arrangement wise I dont really care what folks think, its neither my genre, nor my passion, and this is the mixing clinic not the arrangement clinic anyhoo :)

so no foul, all's good, Im just giving you some friendly jip ;)

On your mix...

I still think this is cheesy and poppy in a good way, its pretty clear mix wise...the kick may be a little too boomy for the style, and the rhythm guitar was maybe little behind the other instruments...not by much, just give it a nudge (I could be wrong, only on 2nd coffee)

I still dont know how you're going to finish this though, every time I do vocal stuff I fall back on a 80s sound, I cant hear them in this so I look forward to its development

I play guitar so I dont own any but Ive heard some great demos of Real Strat and Real LPC...you need a softamp to play them through though but the control on them is excellent

sonivox have a huge amount of guitar vsti's, all very affordable but Ive never demo'd them so I couldnt tell you first hand

alternative buy a cheap guitar, its not that difficult an instrument to get a hang off and for simple stuff you could probably wing it

thanks KC I'll check them out, for now I think I at least worked out a way to make this sound more... real

SLOW IT DOWN!

realised how fast this track plays normally once I've dropped it 6bpm, see link below, hopefully this sounds better now!

ignore the empty spaces mid track, vocals will start coming in here, oh and I got rid of that blippy synthy bass too :)

[MP3]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16918406/Mixdown%287%29.mp3[/MP3] *updated*

there'll be some kind of piano breakdown when the track suddenly stops atm, and if i can pull off the vocals, it should be good (although might have to recruit one of the talented people here for that!!)
