I just acquired a DA-88, tascam 8 trk mixer, and an effects unit for 200 clams from a guy at work. I have an old 4 track that I've done stuff on in the past but now the stakes are higher. I know this is subjective but will a reasonably priced condensor mike make vocals sound that much better than a 58? Would the preout on the back of a Roland Cube be ok for guitar into the mixer or should I use a direct box. Can I mix down to my PC? What software is good for just this?
I appreciate any info in advance.

Ok, I’m no recording guru, but as for software there are lots of basic options but most seem to go for either Cakewalk or Cubase. Cakewalk has a much simpler interface and is generally easier to use than Cubase, which has a much steeper learning curve but is much more professional.
As for guitar recording, its got to be “The POD” if you have not already tried one then DO. (Check the review on the front page)
As for Mics, Dragons ya man for that topic, but check out some of the stuff on this site via the search to see what is being said. My guess would be the condenser as always it’s a case of how much quality you want and how much dollars you got. Sorry I could not be of more help.
Anywaze good luck with your project.

Alan :)

for software , dl all the demos you can , tinker with them , see which one you like most AND runs well on your computer.. i liked cakewalk.. but it wouldnt run right on my computer.. cubase looked too " stock " to me..power tracks pro was fun.. but not intricate enough..vegas pro.. easy to use .. fun.. and ran flawless on my computer... use what you like best.. thats the bottom line..
