Hi
I've recorded for a few years going into the computer (mic'ed vx/guit, preamp, mixing, mastering software and burn CD). I'm really intrigued by the talk of ^warmth and separation given by analog. My question is how to fit the reel-to-reel into the process (I'll only be doing one live track at a time, primarily vx, guit, accoutrement sounds/noises):

Should I record to the reel-to-reel initially and then send to hd for mixing?
or
Should I record to the hd and then send final mix to the reel-to-reel and then back to hd for mastering?

Should I do both, one, or neither of the above?

Thanks so much for your advice

It depends on the quality of the reel to reel, the condition of the heads, type of tape you're using and many other factors.

I would advise you to set up a session in which you can do all of the above and see which sounds best to you using the machine you have available.

Also, it's fairly common practice to record a portion of the performance to tape, for example just the drums or percussion, then bounce those over to digital for overdubs so consider trying that too.
