I smell home cookin!
I'm sitting in a house with a good amount of unfinished space in the basement, and now I'm in the design stage for what to do with it. I want a budget recording studio, but how big should it be? What shape? Does it matter? I have about 16 ft by 22 to work with. Another consideration: control room with window looking into the sound room or not? I'm leaning toward one space for both (with the console turned around where I can reach it and my music gear at the same time), since my use will be 100% for myself and my band, not for recording other artists (at least in the immediate future). Any advice from home studio builders would be appreciated.

I'll be damned. The long lost midimonkey! Hey frederic, glad to see ya! How's the Ford?

OOPS forgot to add this. Welcome to the board Jack. I too have a one room studio. There are lots of people with one room studios, although many have a vocal booth or iso room too. Hang in here and there are lots of tips. Have to run right now though. Later.

Jack,

If you can wait about a week, the September issue of EQ magazine will have an article by Wes Lachot and me outlining the complete design for a studio that will fit perfectly in that space. Blueprints, detailed explanations, etc. are included.

I can't reveal much more because the article isn't out yet, but you are exactly the person this design is meant for.

Great! Thanks very much, Rick and Ethan, for the tips. I knew I'd come to right place. I'll be sure to read your article. Building a studio will be a definite long-term thing, here, so pre-planning is what I'm into.
