New studio, need mic help..

Putting together an inexpensive home studio and need a recommendation on a good mic with the versatility to handle both acoustic guitar and vocals. Budget is $200. I will using Cakewalk GT Pro through an M-Audio Delta 66 card. Mic will be going through a Behringer UB802 mixer.

Recording room is not very dead and I live in an area with a fair amount of ambient noise. My PC is also pretty noisy. I just want to keep it simple and inexpensive to start with and see how it goes.

Since you've got a lot of ambient noise, I'd suggest using a unidirectional dynamic mic, although there aren't many out there that really shine on an acoustic guitar... vocal-wise, not problem... a Shure SM-57 would be a good place to start. You might even get some decent acoustic guitar tracks if you take the time to work on the placement. They go for around $80, without cable.

On the other hand, if you can do something about the ambient noise level, look into the Studio Projects B1 LD condenser. It sounds good on everthing I've tried it on, but it "hears" everything in the room (fans, air conditioners and heaters, zippers, matches being struck, lips being smacked, cars driving by). They go for around $79-$85, without cable. hey also require 48v phantom power, which your Behringer should provide.

If you really have that much noise there you may need an isolation booth or something to block the noise before you even worry about microphones.

Mic Questions

Alright, I too have a question. If I am going to be recording vocals, drums and guitar in my isolated area, how many mics would I need for this? I want to probably go much cheaper on all the drum mics then a vocal. Any ideas? Mics are on the lower side of my list of priorities, so I don't want to spend too much on them just yet. Also, can anyone recommend a good wireless mic so that I can record other abstract noises??

Hmmm.... You're probably gonna need a minimum of 4 mics on the drums (kick, snare, stereo overheads). A shure sm57 could be used as both a snare mic and also to mic your guitar amp. A pair of Studio Projects B1s could be your stereo overheads as well as being a fairly decent vocal mic. Not sure about a good kick mic. I'm sure others here can help you there.

A wireless mic for recording? Please explain.

Id get a Marshall MXLv67G and a Marshall MXL603......maybe a used Shure sm57 if budget allowed.....

Like Gidge said, or replace the V67 with a SP B1 or B3.

Two Marshall MXL603S, one Marshall MXLV67G, one Shure SM57 and one Sennheiser MD421. The condensers are cheap enough to buy new and I'd buy the dynamics used. You could record a lot of stuff with these 5 microphones.
