New Song: It's All Right

I listened to all three versions and they do get better. Your drums sound nice to me, a lot of room, but they're good.

Vocals sound cool, too much reverb for me, but cool anyway...stick with it if you like it.

Bass is punchy in the third mix, a little mellower would sound cooler I think, more low end, less mids.

Guitars, I think the biggest problem is the sound coming from the amp. You can mess with recordings all you want, but I think spending some time getting a better amp tone would help.

Cool song, nice recording, everything I have to say is just nits and my opinions...I always like hearing your stuff, and I love that you have a new song every week or two!

Lovin the new bass line. I am going to have to agree with aaron, your guitar tone could use some work. It will change everything.

Vocals, IMO, have much to much reverb on them for my taste.
 
I created a new arrangement and I think I tweaked the guitar tone some...

It's getting better. But what's going on with the guitar tone? What guitar/amp/mic are you using? It sounds pretty terrible. Real scratchy and thin and cheap sounding. Your songs are cool. That guitar tone kills it to death though.

I think a little less reverb on the vocals would be good too.

Yeah, I agree. The guitar tone should be your next focus. Everything is coming together now, with that exception. I am also curious what you are playing through.

BTW, I have two chickens cut up and marinating in your recipe Greg. Looking forward to it. I did substitute for a Breck ESB. Friggen liquor store was out of Shiner, and the only other dark was Becks. Cant stand that shit.

Here is my guitar rig chain:

Guitar -> Blackstar HT-Dual (Tube Distortion) -> Fender Frontman 2r (1 x 12" practice amp/clean channel) -> SM57 -> Interface

Maybe I should post a track of just the guitar and you guys could make a recommendation?

Ahhh, I see. Yeah, um, you might be stuck with that tone.

What if you ditch the pedal? Does that little amp have a crunch channel or a gain knob?

yeah - the amp has a gain channel... The pedal has a lot of tone control - maybe I just need to tweak it - it has high/mid/bass knobs -
 
Not sure what you can get out of that little amp, though I have a Fender twin that actually sounds pretty good when driven hard. Make sure the speakers start to break up a bit, and mess with the mic placement. 1/8" can make a huge difference there. I usually use a 57 and a 421 on the cone, and find the sweet spots. When you find it, you will know.
 
I made a track of just the two guitar tracks panned hard left and right.

Maybe this will shed some light on it? I think it sounds good but I'm half deaf and don't really have that much experience recording live guitar.

Does this clip help any - is it something I can maybe fix with EQ or pedal settings? Or you think I should mess with mic placement or something still?



Maybe if you give me an example of a better tone I could try and match it? I think I could do that if I threw it in Cubase to compare it
 
Man, it is hard to say. The tone has no body to it. It can be due to mike placement, but more likely the amp itself. Send me your cpr, let me see if eq from my end can make a difference. Maybe we can find something that can work for now. Get yourself a nice tube head bro. :)

If a tube head/combo is out of the question, you're a perfect candidate for an amp sim software. I guarantee a sim will sound better than your current setup.


Lt Bob is selling a nice Marshall tube combo. Maybe PM him.
 
Sent you a couple files of your guitar tracks with various EQ to help them. The bottom line though, is that the tone is just not good to begin with. Things will get much easier once you have good guitar tone. Your drum and bass tracks are sounding way better lately. The next step is to nail down a gtr tone that works for your songs. Then, girls will shed clothes, and the money will start coming in! :)
 
I got a new amp and recorded new guitar tracks

also opened some space up for the drums, reduced the vocal reverb.
