New Song- First Mix

Hi All. Just "finished" recording this song today and my ears are getting a bit numb to it. Would you mind giving it a listen and offering suggestions, comments, etc.? My biggest difficulty usually is mixing my vocals.

cool tune! This reminds me a bit of Alice in Chains. The sound is maybe not as beefy as I would have liked, but it's a good song. That guitar solo around 3:00 ish was real nice! I came close to missing this one. It almost fell off the front page with no replies!:mad:It didn't click to me right away that you were 'the Wind and the Tumbleweed' dude..:D..that is a really good tune. You have a very cool style. When I get a chance I'll be checkin' out some more of your tunes...

Thanks B. Agreed completely....any suggestions on how to beef it up. Do you think the mids are too high?
 
Neat song! Here are some suggestions:

I like the heavier guitar that comes in around 2:33, but I think it would be better with a crunchier sound. MORE GAIN!!! BTW, I think the sound on the Solo is very nice.

The drums seem appropriate for the style, but something about the ride cymbal early in the song bothered me. I might have done better without that, or with something changed there.

You almost tricked me there. I thought the song was over at 3:41. :)

Overall I thought the mix was good. Everything seemed pretty clean to me, and the levels on the vocals were goo.
 
Sounds like: godsmack, Alice in Chains, Brand X, Dave Mathews (=good)
I like how the acoustic gtr sits in the mix, maybe bring up the organ pad, ditto on the vocals (just a tad)

Needs some sound or something to intro, very short swell perhaps or maybe a low pad for a bar or two

very well polished, good stuff

If you’re looking to beef it up, try doubling the bass with a dist. gtr in spots (low in mix, heavy mids eq)
 
SLuiCe, I wouldn't have any mix suggestions because I think there are things about your stuff that sound better than mine.... I can say this about the tunes though, you have a good vein tapped with your style......... It sounds different than a lot of stuff I hear around here :cool: There's some electric guitar additives on "The Passing" that got a bit loud at times.... the sound on 'Away from the City' was a bit beefier, so maybe use some of that mixing technique on future tunes.? I'm not sure, but as I'm listening to some of your other tunes, I can say that they sound pretty consistent, and the tunes are quite cool...................quite cool indeed! :cool: I look forward to hearing more!

B.- I've heard your work. I wouldn't say you have no mixing advice. Your ears are very good! I'll take a look at that guitar on The Passing. By the way, I hope you don't mind I downloaded Safety Dance for personal use. Couldn't resist.

Elephant- I had a 3/4 waltz type intro for this that was a bit too long and really didn't fit well. But I also found it needs something there, you're absolutely right. I like the "swell" idea. Actually, I could swell a nasty little Paul Reed Smith track into it, then carry it out as thickening guitar brooding along down below. I like your thinking!
I may have revisions up today.

Wow.

That's a powerful mix. I can hear the DMatthews edge in the vocals; works well, I think. My ears tell me that the vocals could be more forward in the mix - there is an opportunity for them to be Right In Your Face, which might do well with everything else that's going on. I'm learning stuff listening to this. Thanks!
 
I'm forced into Lo-Fi mode because of phone line considerations, but I'm liking what I hear. VERY AIC, with some Dave Matthews overtones.
 
What a cool song! I really loved the rhythm changes throughout and the overall ambiance and feel of it.

You've heard all of the feedback that I would suggest already. I really liked this tune. The only thing I would mention may be to put the vocals a little more out front (I think that was already mentioned ... just wanted to reaffirm it).

Overall this was a really moving track!

I took some suggestions and I think I found the beef, so to speak. Added some serious thickness with guitars and a neat intro (at elephant's suggestion.)

How are the vocals sitting in this mix?

Well I didn't here the first version. It's not thick, but that's not a problem. I like swaying motion sound with the guitar and bass. It was like being seasick in a good way.

The band locks together, and groove is tight and fluid.

Cool.

Good tune. The guitars sound good but still it seems it's missing some ass. It just feels "thin" somehow. Still, the song carries itself real well.
 
The song itself was good - I really liked the riff. The recording was real low. When I cranked up my speakers, everything seemed to be placed well in the mix as far as space goes. I think the vocals could have stood out more, I really liked the harmonies and wanted to hear them more pronounced. I also think the kick drum could have been a little more defined. It might be an overall volume issue...

I was afraid of that. My $200 Altecs are reminding me that you get what you pay for. My left one shit the bed and I remixed it with headphones- also not exactly pro level. Gotta start somewhere, LOL. BTW, it's not a band unfortunately. It's just me. I played the drums through my keyboard. I don't know which is more time consuming- getting a good real drum sound or playing em through a Korg Triton!

What do yall use for speakers?
 
I use Yorkville YSM-1's and Paradigm mini mkII's. I also check mixes on a pair of Realistic Minimus 7's(Auratone equivilents:D ).
 
No matter what I use it doesn't help! I keep making the same mistakes.. Give me a $10,000 pair of monitors, and I will still make the mix a muddy one! :confused: :D


event 20/20.s passive, also a pair of bookshelf JBL/s ($189 U.S.) also my computer speakers, Altec Lansings....also a small pair of cheap Yamahas...(not NS 10's) although I would like a pair..O also have a pair of Bose...and A pair of 15"Cerwin Vegas.
 
That's funny B. BTW, I used to live in Long Beach, B. If I had known there was another musician in LI besides Billy Joel I might have stayed longer ;-)

I just posted a remix that I think addresses those problems, so if anyone's got 4 minutes and 50 seconds to kill I'd like to know if I'm getting closer.

I like this song better everytime I listen.
Almost afraid to suggest anything else but,
back the dist. grts off just a tad,
vocals are sitting much better
