New Song (and me trying to sound like The Edge)

Well, I've re-done some recorded stuff of mine, and I kinda ripped off the edge on the tune I would like some feedback on.

The song is called "Something Better", and you can find it here. The song should start playing automatically. Alternatively, you can download the mp3's here

Really the only thing edge-like is some dotted eighth note delay.

So what do you think of the song/recording/mix, etc? I'm recording all my better material for a CD. I'm about half way done - the songs I've got done are the other ones in the player/on the music page. Feel free to listen/comment on those as well.

I appreciate any and all comments/suggestions. If you like the music/website, join the site! You'll get on the mailing list and then I'll let you know when the CD is done. Maybe I'll do a HR rebate, haha.

During the first couple of measures, the lead guitar sounded like 1db too loud. Just a notch. Just the first couple of measures and not the whole intro. Maybe it's even ok the way it is.

During 2:15 - 2:34 time the acoustic guitar panned right sounded just a little louder that I'd like. Just a tad. Maybe by a db (1db). edit: The second time when I'm listening I don't see any problem with this but I'll leave it in just so you'll get a chance to check it out and decide. :)

On the cheap work headphones, I can't hear the bass very clear. I can hear it in places and I know it's there but I just can't here it very clear all the time. It's most probably my cheap work headphones.

Really like the lead_rhythm (don't know what else to call it) panned to the left. Love the delay on it.

So there's actually 3 different guitars? I can hear three different guitars in three different roles.

Really like the song as a composition/music/lyrics and so on. :)

Thanks for listening and for the comments!

I'm trying to think - there are 4 different guitar parts total, but they only play all at once during one part of the song (last chorus). There's the acoustic part (rhythm - on the right), the electric lead part (on the right), the electric pick part with the delay (kind of a rhythm track, left), and the electric rhythm (basically just barre chords strummed during choruses/bridge, stereo).

I had a hard time getting this one mixed. I tried to balance everything and get it so you could hear all the parts working together but not having one stick out really bad. I also wanted to give some parts the spotlight during certain parts of the song (like the electric pick delay thing during the bridge, the lead in the intro, etc).

All electrics were recorded with a GuitarPort (Vox AC30 setting) - I use a PRS SE Soapbar II.
Acoustics were done with a Takamine FD-360 mic'd with a stereo pair of MXL 603s's (x/y config)
Vocals were through a Studio Projects C1.
Bass was a dean bass through an SWR combo, using the DI out.
Drums were loops from Drums on Demand.

All this went into a PreSonus FirePod. Mixed/mastered in Cubase.

Thanks for listening!

Hey Brian

Sounds real good man. Acoustic at times sticks out a bit much for me. In some of the bigger sections I would rather hear more of the electric lines, but that's a personal preference, not necessarily anything wrong with your mix. Wanted to let you know you have a fellow Oklahoman here, I'm in Edmond. I'd like to know when you play around town. Your songs are very very well written.

SWEET! - you live in Edmond? I'm on Penn and Hefner in OKC. The other guy I play with (he plays bass in my stuff) lives in Edmond - he's the youth pastor at the Memorial Road MB Church. We play there every Wednesday night and some Sunday mornings. We/I haven't played out around anywhere lately, but sometimes I'll hit the open mic night at Galileo's or something. AJ (the youth pastor) and I are going to try and get a gig at a coffee house up in Edmond by where he lives (I'll get the name of the place from him).

Thanks for listening - glad to see another Oklahoman around here. Do you have a link to your stuff - I'd love to listen to it.

I only had a chance to listen to Something Better. Nothing to change by me....It sounds great! I really like the four different guitar parts - well I like everything but the guitar parts are my favorite.... I also really like the chorus at around 2:00 - excellent vocals there. Good songwriting, well played, great mix. I'll try to listen to your other ones later.....
